When I think about the time of our Liberation War in Bangladesh, one thought always comes to mind—the freedom fighters are the true heroes. Without their courage, sacrifice, and love for the country, we wouldn't be able to speak freely in this independent land today

I feel these stories more for me as a Bangladeshi girl. Let me share some stories I know about how ordinary people evolved to freedom fighters and those are stories of people, I heard in our village from the elders of my family. On reflecting about the great courage and the great deal of sacrifice that people of that time had to give, my hearts swells with pride. I tell myself that only those people have given us the freedom that we enjoy today.

These stories of heroism around the period of the Liberation War pays homage to our heroes. The part which I consider to be the most sentimental is the fact that most of these people had no training in fighting and they had never been to war. But due to their love for their motherland, their language and culture they took their lives and committed themselves into the battle. They understood it was the freedom or death. The only way that was left to them was to fight or die. This was so because they were willing, determined and had the courage to go in to do the job.

Real Heroes of Bangladesh

In my opinion, the biggest examples of heroes, they left their identity, family, comfort, and everything for the single desire – to be free. On one side there are the criminal acts of the Pakistani army, the slaughter, the abuse of women. On the other side were these heroes who were tall in front of them saying, “We shall not give up. ”

Women during the Liberation War also have made great contribution in this regard. Women did not only sit at home idle, a good number of them engaged in the war actively and physically, some as nurses, others as informants to the fighters for independence. These women who seemed to endanger their lives in order to participate in war are also heroines too.

Today we are the citizens of an independent state. We can take pride in our own flags, our own culture, our own land. However, this independence was not came about without a struggle. It came through the efforts of millions of freedom fighters, martyrs and their families which they made a lot of sacrifices. It is because of these heroes that the country is free today and this is why their stories should not be forgotten.

If someone said to me, who is your hero? Then I would like to tell that, my heroes are the Muktijoddhas who fought and sacrificed their lives without any expectation of freedom of Bangladesh.
