It was a clear and peaceful evening, when a group of schoolmates gathered in an open field together with parents and teachers.
Each with a sky lantern in hand. They did it to remember their friend Andrew, who died too soon.
Among the children was Mark, who couldn't believe that a simple lantern could carry a message to the sky. Andrew certainly wouldn't see it, but he didn't want to ruin the moment for the others. So, with a sigh, he lit his sky lantern and let it go along with all the others.
The lanterns began to slowly rise, lighting up the night sky with a dance of lights. Mark observed his lantern, which joined the others in a harmonious flight, the show was very beautiful, some parents started taking photographs with their cell phones.
Mark didn't take his eyes off his lantern which was flying lower than the others, for a moment he feared it might come back, when it broke away from the group and started flying towards a nearby mountain. The children followed it with their eyes, began to murmur and point at it as it flew away. Finally, the sky lantern rested delicately on the top of a nearby mountain, its light shining a little longer and then going out.
Excitement grew among the children, who remembered the many times they and their friend Andrew had dreamed of climbing that same mountain when they grew up.
Mark remained silent, struck by that scene. Maybe, he thought, there really was something special about those lanterns. Maybe, somehow, Andrew had received their message.
The End.
