En español existen al menos tres palabras relacionadas con la idea de “pensar circularmente”. La primera es la figura geométrica: “Círculo”. También está: “Ciclo” para referirse a un proceso con etapas diferenciadas (inicio, desarrollo y fin). Y una tercera es: “Circularidad” como la forma que adopta un proceso donde se regresa o se vuelve al inicio para recomenzar o reiniciar.
Tal y como plantea el argumento central de una de mis novelas favoritas: “La Historia Interminable” de Michael Ende. (También traducida en español como “La Historia Sin Fin”). Sin embargo, me gusta más, el adjetivo “interminable” pues refiere a una acción o proceso que aún no finaliza pues algo la detiene en su fluir, en su ciclo.
Aquellos que hayan tenido la oportunidad de leer “La Historia Interminable”, quizás recuerden que, a mitad del libro, el protagonista (Bastián) entra en un momento de indecisión que lo detiene en la acción de darle un nuevo nombre a la Princesa, mientras “la nada” llevaba a su fin a todo el país de Fantasía.
En ese momento de parálisis de Bastián, la Princesa decide volver a contar la historia, una y otra y otra vez, reiniciándola cada vez que llegaba al momento de indecisión de Bastián, para así contener el avance de “la nada”.
La vida fluye en ciclos
Relacionando los párrafos precedentes, con el tema de los ciclos, y como estos mueven y renuevan la vida. Creo que ese punto crucial de la historia interminable, recoge la esencia de la continuidad del cambio y la transformación y cómo podemos afectar su continuidad.
Es cierto, la vida fluye, la vida es un ciclo, pero...
Creamos situaciones ante las que nos enfrentamos con pánico, con dudas y en vez de fluir entramos en el caos, en el mismo centro de la incertidumbre paralizantes.
Sin embargo, toda moneda tiene dos caras, e igual los círculos... La otra cara de estar paralizado en centro de la incertidumbre y caos es que, al accionar, al dar un paso en cualquier dirección, comenzamos a tener claridad, a descubrir caminos, a hacer sendas.
La segunda parte de “La Historia Interminable” inicia con un Bastián luego de haber “bautizado” con un nuevo nombre a la princesa, en medio de la nada, pero con la facultad y capacidades para crear y recrear a su antojo la historia, el país de fantasía, el universo.
Y la historia se reinicia...
Y cada elección, crea consecuencias y trae resultados. Para Bastián (que ahora se ha reinventado en todo su opuesto), cada elección que hacía lo apartaba de su pasado, de su historia de origen. Uno de esos resultados que obtuvo, fue que se convertiría en nada, sería nadie.
De la misma manera otro de los resultados que obtuvo, fue un gran amigo que, acompañándolo desde lejos, en el momento crucial cuando la historia se acercaba a su fin, le recordó quién era.
Y de allí, Bastián retorna a su realidad, al lugar del que había huido refugiándose en fantasía. Pero ahora, renovado, integrado, con la posibilidad de un nuevo reinicio.

In Spanish there are at least three words related to the idea of “thinking circularly.” The first is the geometric figure: “Circle”. There is also: “Cycle” to refer to a process with differentiated stages (beginning, development and end). And a third is: “Circularity” as the form adopted by a process where one returns or returns to the beginning to restart or restart.

At that moment of Bastián's paralysis, the Princess decides to retell the story, over and over and over again, restarting it each time she reached Bastián's moment of indecision, in order to contain the advance of "nothing."
Life flows in cycles
Relating the preceding paragraphs to the theme of cycles, and how they move and renew life. I believe that this crucial point in the never-ending story captures the essence of the continuity of change and transformation and how we can affect its continuity.
It's true, life flows, life is a cycle, but...
We create situations in which we face with panic, with doubts and instead of flowing we enter chaos, in the very center of paralyzing uncertainty.
However, every coin has two sides, and so do circles... The other side of being paralyzed in the center of uncertainty and chaos is that by taking action, by taking a step in any direction, we begin to have clarity, to discover paths. , to make paths.
The second part of “The Neverending Story” begins with Bastián after having “baptized” the princess with a new name, in the middle of nowhere, but with the power and capabilities to create and recreate the story at will, the fantasy land, the universe.
And history repeats itself...
And every choice creates consequences and brings results. For Bastián (who has now reinvented himself as the complete opposite of him), every choice he made separated him from his past, from his origin story. One of those results that he obtained was that he would become nothing, he would be nobody.
In the same way, another of the results that he obtained was a great friend who accompanied him from afar, at the crucial moment when the story was approaching its end, he reminded him who he was.
And from there, Bastián returns to his reality, to the place from which he had fled taking refuge in fantasy. But now, renewed, integrated, with the possibility of a new restart..

Wow, such an impressive approach! It's cool to think how life's all about cycles and choices. It shows how the stuff we decide can totally change our journey, you know? Like, even when things feel uncertain, every step we take helps us grow and figure things out.

My well-read friend ;-)) Michael Ende is great! Have you read more of his work? I'm happy to recommend "The Prison of Freedom"...
The only linguistic peculiarity I notice in the German title: Michael ENDE writes an "Never ENDING story " ;-)) If that's not contradictory...!
