  • What are the economic & social ramifications of self-upvote in Steem Blockchain?

In 2016, the social platform "steemit" was created on the steem blockchain where people can earn a passive income generating the reward. Since 2016, we have seen significant changes in the voting system and how it impacts the economic and social areas. In 2016, the reward system followed a quadratic equation F(x) = x^2. This system encouraged people to invest in stem and then convert to steem power. This system was beneficial to the richer users and not beneficial to the newcomers and ordinary people. This caused the reward curved to change. In 2017, the reward curve becomes a linear equation F(x) = x. But this system was more complex. People began to vote himself, use bots. As a result, poor content could reach the top and the good contents were deprived of good votes. Finally, the convergent linear equation was created in 2019. And the system follows f(x)= x2/(x+1). This equation discourages self-voting and promotes community voting. This system focuses on better social interaction and higher value content discovery.

  • Do you gain better curation rewards by upvoting others as compared to self-upvote?

we will make more curation rewards when we upvote other's posts than self upvoting. Let's look at an example below:

image.png

When I upvote on my own post at 100% weight, the pending curation reward becomes 0.011SP.

image.png

When I upvote on @sandysparkle's post at 100% weight, the pending curation reward becomes 0.018SP.

  • What is the difference between isolated judgment and community judgment in curation? How do you adapt to community judgment on quality content in Steem Blockchain?

The main difference between isolated judgment and community judgment in curation is - In the isolated judgment each curator votes for separate posts, and their reward as curator will be less. And in the community judgment, the community agrees to vote together as a community. As a result, the reward as curation will be greater. The curation trial or delegation to community account can be a greater example of community judgment. More steem power means more reward. If we can be a part of community judgment, it will help us to gain more rewards. Another way we can follow what the community is voting for and then we can vote for the same. The adoption of community judgment can be very much essential for the newbies too as they usually don't have proper guidelines of curation.

  • Does that bring economic incentive for you? If yes, explain with real examples

Let's start with a real example, then we can come to a conclusion.

"Isolated judgment"

I have voted on this post after 15 hours at the voting value of $0.01. Let's do the mathematical calculation:

Pcurator= (½) * (√PT) * (√P1-√P0) Δt

Here,

PT= Post Payout at the end of 7 days = $ 0.01(Assume Its final)
P0= Post Payout before voting = $ 0.00
P1= Post Payout after voting = $ 0.01
Δt= 1, as I have voted after 5 mins.

=> Pcurator= (½) * (√0.01) * (√0.01-√0)= $0.005
Curation reward= $0.005; That means Isolated judgment produces less curation reward than my upvote value.

"Community judgment"

I have voted on this post after 5 hours at the voting value of $0.01. Let's do the mathematical calculation:

Pcurator= (½) * (√PT) * (√P1-√P0) Δt

Here,

PT= Post Payout at the end of 7 days = $ 48.05(Assume Its final)
P0= Post Payout before voting = $ 47.75
P1= Post Payout after voting = $ 48.05
Δt= 1, as I have voted after 5 mins.

=> Pcurator= (½) * (√48.05) * (√48.05-√47.75)= $0.075
Curation reward= $0.075; That means community judgment produces higher curation reward than my upvote value.

So, we can come to a conclusion that, Community judgment brings more economic incentives than isolated judgment.

  • Go to Steemworld.org, check your Upvote value( at the current SP, VP). Take a screenshot. Then go to the Steemit trending page, find a post with a payout of more than $10 but less than $50(Age less than 6 Days 12 hrs). Upvote it. Take screenshots before and after upvote. Similarly, go to another post on the Trending page, find a post with a payout of more than $100( Age less than 6 Days 12 Hrs). Upvote it. Take screenshots before and after upvote. Tell the differences between the two. Which one has produced a greater Upvote value & Curation reward for you with the same resources(SP, VP)? Explain?

Calculation:

I have voted on this post after 4 days at the voting value of $0.02. Let's do the mathematical calculation:

  • Isolated judgment: 42.00 - 41.34 = $0.066
  • Pcurator= (½) * (√PT) * (√P1-√P0) Δt

Here,

PT= Post Payout at the end of 7 days = $ 42.00 (Assume Its final)
P0= Post Payout before voting = $ 41.34
P1= Post Payout after voting = $ 42.00
Δt= 1, as I have voted after 5 mins.

=> Pcurator= (½) * (√42.00) * (√42.00-√41.34)= $0.165
Curation reward= $0.165

That means the community judgment is 2.5times higher than the isolation judgment.

I visited the steemit trending page and chose this post. This post was done 16 hours ago and received upvotes of $185.47 till now.

Calculation:

I have voted on this post after 9 hours at the voting value of $0.02. Let's do the mathematical calculation:

  • Isolated judgment: 185.47 - 184.57 = $0.09

  • Pcurator= (½) * (√PT) * (√P1-√P0) Δt

Here,

PT= Post Payout at the end of 7 days = $ 185.47 (Assume Its final)
P0= Post Payout before voting = $ 184.57
P1= Post Payout after voting = $ 185.47
Δt= 1, as I have voted after 5 mins.

=> Pcurator= (½) * (√185.47) * (√185.47-√184.57)= $0.225
Curation reward= $0.225

That means the community judgment is 2.5times higher than the isolation judgment.

Great info, Im working on understanding how to best utilize my steempower and this really illustrates some good points and uses of voting power that I didnt know about.

I learned a lot from reading your post.

Thank you
