Greeting Steemit friends
This is an interesting topic, which I would love many steemit to look into participating.
What is the Genesis blockchain? Explain its meaning. Show screenshots of the Genesis block of the Steem blockchain.
Looking at the word Genesis in Christian belief means the beginning of an event. Genesis blockchain will refer to the first block generated or hard-coded into an application. Steemit is a web3 application on the steem blockchain, so I can say the first action on the platform, which generated a block was the Genesis blockchain.
This block will have to do with recording, securing, encrypting, and starting the blockchain with which other new blocks will be attached. Genesis blocks do not have a pre-created block to attach to, and they create the first-ever date stamp on the blockchain.
How to screenshot the Genesis block of the Steem blockchain.
For us to have access to the Genesis block of the Steem blockchain, I will have to explore the Steemworld web application.
From the list of tools listed, we can find the Block Explorer. Click on the icon.
The small pop-up gives the user the chance to input the block number. Genesis blocks are either number 0 or 1. I tried 0, and it was invalid, so I went ahead to input 1.
We can see there was no transaction record
As we can see, the first operation which leads to the creation of the genesis block
What is the last block produced? Determine the total time of the Steem blockchain, using the production date of the Genesis block and the production date of the last block.
For us to have the last block, I will have to use another web application Steemyy
screentshot on 2023-08-28 at 12:34:43 (GMT +1)
From the screenshot and at the moment of the screenshot, the last block number produced was #77592974 on 2023-08-28 at 12:34:15 (GMT).
With the time of the Genesis block production and the time of the last block production, we can calculate the total time of the steem blockchain.
- Time of the steem blockchain = Time of the last block production -time of the Genesis block production
=> 2023-08-28 12:24:15 - 2016-03-24 16:05:00
=> 2713.853646 days
=> ~7.43 years as seen in the screenshot above
Explain the downtime of a blockchain - why can it occur?
From the word, Downtime is the period when a service is unavailable and can not be utilized. Most people who work online have one way or the other to face downtime with web applications. This is the moment where there is a breakage in communication between the user and the data on the server.
Same as in the blockchain case, the downtime of a blockchain is that period where distributed ledger technology can fail just like any other technology. We understand that in blockchain when a node goes offline or has a problem. Blockchain operations continue due to the presence of multiple nodes, but in cases where the operation has run out of nodes. There will be a blackout in the network and that period is called downtime of a blockchain.
Reason for the downtime of a blockchain
Hardware maintenance: blockchain infrastructure requires the latest updates, which need to follow with new technology. In a case where several operations outnumber the capacity of the hardware. The blockchain will be forced to freeze or restart. During that moment, most of the nodes will go offline and will create a downtime in the network.
Hardfork: Most of the time on the blockchain, a hard fork is applied during application updates. The downtime might be very small, but they usually have downtime on the network.
Injection of invalid nodes: Sometimes a blockchain will have to go down due to an uncompleted operation due to invalid nodes in the network.
Has the Steem blockchain experienced downtime? If it has presented downtime, explain, mentioning the cases.
Yes, I learned during my reading about the steem blockchain that was when Hive was finally forked from the steem network. It was a difficult moment for steemit and the steem community. I will not want to go into the details, but I know during that period many steemit users didn't have access to their wallets which led to a massive outage on the internet. This happened in March 2020, the same month as the fork.
To conclude, Steem presently has a great uptime as compared to some blockchains. 99.3 in over 7 and a half years is super good. I appreciate the team on how the downtime in March 2020 was handled. Communication was good and I'm sure that is why some of us in particular built a strong trust for the network and joined steemit later in July 2020.

Friend, I congratulate you for carrying out an investigative work of great contribution to all, you have explained it in a good way that can be understood. In addition, you have made a calculation of the ages, activity and inactivity of the blockchain.
You are right because we were somewhat concerned about the inactivity of the platform in those days and we thought we had lost it, but Steemit is a good network.
Thanks for sharing.

I am happy to see your participation after along time in Crypto Academy and I am happy that you have good knowledge about age of steem blockchain your explanation is good about Genesis block that it is a block that creates at the birth of blockchain or when a blockchain forms or start
For the calculation of age you used subtraction method with seems to be very easy but while calculating you need a lengthy procedure thats why it is more good if you use spreadsheet for this purpose as I have also used in my post you can also visit my entry
If I talk about down time definition then you are right that when blocks chain 4 a temporary period of time don't work properly then it is called down time and you have also explain some of the causes and some facts about down time that is down time has been occurred in STEEM or not.God luck to you

@khursheedanwar, thanks for reaching out. I will look at the calculation in your post to have a good understanding of what you trying to explain.
It has been I while since I was interested in this topic to have an understanding of Genesis block.

Your welcome And I'm happy for the way in which you appreciate my comment at your entry and I am happy that you learn a lot from my post especially about the calculations
Genesis block is a thing which is really very interesting when you we listen about it and it was a good opportunity by Crypto Academy so that we all may learn about Genesis block in a more deep way

De acuerdo con la edad de la block chain que has determinado, y el tiempo de inactividad que muestras en la imagen de 16.65 días prácticamente insignificante para los 7.43 años de edad.
Saludos y éxitos. ¡Un gran abrazo de buena suerte!

Yes it is true that the Steem Blockchain has experienced a lot of downtime in the previous years due to the addition of new features and improvements in the platform. Thank you so for sharing with us 😊
Best wishes 🍀🤞

Brother you work very hard while writing this blog and I really agree with everything that you have explained about Genesis block that it is a block created at every initial stage after the creation of any blockchain and secondly I want to make a clear that Genesis block is very important because other subsequent blocks that creates after the Genesis block also depends upon information that Genesis block have.
You have calculated in a good way about age of this blockchain as well as on the other hand I agree with you that downtime could be due to hardware infrastructure as well as you have also explain some of the importance and ideas in which we can clearly identify the downtime in this blockchain I wish you success and good luck to you in your entry

Feliz tarde ☀️
