Hello people of heartchurch, it's been a while. I found a story in the bible that is really touching and I'd like to share it across so all can read and learn from it.
25 Now a discussion arose between some of John's disciples and a Jew over purification. 26 And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.” 27 John answered, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven. 28 You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.’ 29 The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom's voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.”- John 3:25-30
This particular quotation is about John the baptist, his disciples and Jesus Christ.
During those times, many people saw John aa a great person, full of wisdom and thus he had many disciples.
Now there came a time when Jesus was baptizing other faithful people and the disciples saw this as a sign of disregard, disrespect or perhaps, a way of exalting himself over John the baptist(because John was the one who baptised and not Jesus, at that time). So some of the disciples said this as quoted in the bible,
“Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.”
They expected John to be riled up about this because they felt John was the superior, but John did the exact opposite of what they expected. He answered,
“A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.”
John, in all humility explained everything to his disciples and went on further to tell them Jesus is far greater than him and that if Jesus is "happy" or great, he is also happy(as he likened it to the bridegroom and his friend). And he also made them understand that it is better for Jesus to increase for him to decrease.
In other words, it's better for Jesus to be exalted rather than him, John.
This short story talks to us about one simple thing in life, humility.
These things happen in our lives all the time. Most of the time, we see upcoming people as threats to our positions or the offices we hold.
What we should bear in our minds is that, God does things in His own ways and there's nothing we can do about that. What we can actually do is giving ourselves up for God’s will and with that we will be blessed also.
The bible tells us that
"Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted."- Mathew 23:12
Whatever God has planned for us, we should accept that in good faith. We should be happy for the progress of others rather than being jealous or envious or perhaps seeing them as threats.
If we be like John the baptist, we will always have favour in God's eyes. Try to make others grow and progress and in that way, we shall also grow.
he must increase but I must decrease
I wish you take something from this piece that I've written and I strongly believe that if you practise this, God will bless you abundantly.
Thanks for reading and May God be with us all 🌹✌🏽🙏🏾.
