THE STATE OF COMPLACENCY

What really is complacency? How does it affect us? Can complacency lead to sin? Stay with me while we elucidate this thought.

The fundamental diagnosis is that many are complacent. To be complacent means to feel satisfied with the current state and to be uninterested in trying to make things better. It is self – satisfaction accompanied by a lack of awareness of dangers or deficiencies. It is also a feeling of calm and satisfaction with your own abilities or situation thus preventing you from trying harder.

FACTS TO CONSIDER

A state of self – satisfaction: Tons of people are in the state of total satisfaction, so much that they’re not on the lookout for anything better- for themselves. To them, they’ve gotten to the zenith of their achievements. They are neither hot nor cold according to Revelation 3:16, so they will be spewed from God’s mouth. Self-satisfaction can come on the strength of one’s achievement and progress in life. Many have gotten to a level spiritually where they have become satisfied with the thought that the enemy cannot come near them anymore, and so become lax in the spirit, thereby leaving an opening for the devil to invade their lives.

Disinclined to make things better: Complacency has made tons of people loose interest in trying to improve upon themselves and to make their lives better. Worse is that many people who have been complacent in their sin, have been consumed with the mindset that God will soon change His mind due to the number of people involved in sinning. Even when they are rebuked by the word, the place of complacency has clouded their interest and passion to repent, make adjustments and please God.

Lack of awareness of danger: Complacency is a state of danger; but the sad news is that, the victims are not aware of the dangers looming around them. Complacency also blinds its victims of the deficiencies in their lives that need serious attention, and that could also lead to danger if neglected.

An Anonymous quote goes thus: “Complacency is a blight that saps energy, dulls attitudes, and causes a drain on the brain. The first symptom is satisfaction with things as they are. The second is rejection of things as they might be “Good enough” becomes todays watch word and tomorrow’s standard. Complacency makes people fear the unknown, mistrust the untried, and abhor the new. Like water, complacency people follow the easiest course….downhill. They draw false strength from looking back”

God may not come to the aid of a person who is complacent in the state he is. Many are complacent as babes in the Lord, that is the reason they are unskillful in the doctrine of righteousness. Because the scriptures assured that the hungry and thirsty would be filled according to Matthew 5.

The dimensions and Glory of God are not made available to the complacent; because they'll reject any proposition given to enable them transit from where they are to a better location.
Everyone experiences complacency from time to time, but it’s imperative that we oppose it and refuse to allow complacency to rule our life.

Here is how another person describes complacency:
“It invades areas once occupied by our passion, interest, desire, and focus. When complacent, the valued things that captivated our thoughts, hearts and energies tend to fade from priority and can even become mundane or the boring routine of everyday life. Burnout in our work life, loss of fire in relationships, and the lack of zeal for things we once held important are common experiences. The shame is not in complacency but in the failure to recognize it and take corrective measures to regain our footing”

The main aim of this article is to unveil the plans of the devil. The devil wants to bring believers to a place of complacency where they don’t feel any remorse for sin.

It’s a place where the conscience of its victim is sacrificed on the altar of complacency. Where there is no more zeal, passion and hunger towards God; and the years spent in church is the only legacy the individual has, without any encounter with God. A place where there is no sensitivity towards the warning signals of the Spirit. This is a place of Spiritual complacency, and death.

God began to speak to the prophet Zephaniah about His plans; He said: “And it shall come to pass at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with candles, and punish the men that are settled on their lees: that say in their heart, The Lord will not do good, neither will he do evil. Zephaniah 1:12

Amos 6:1 “woe to them that are at ease in Zion and trust in the mountain of Samaria….
There are always punishments and curses on those who are complacent. The system of the kingdom does not condone complacency. That is why Peter encouraged the church to grow in grace and the knowledge of the LORD - 2 Peter 3:18.
