As our faces differ, so does our perception of gifts and giving. Gary Chapman in his book, The five love languages for singles, singled out gifts as one of the major ways of expressing love.

Pathetically, one sobering reality today is that people are using gifts for every purpose but for expression of love. Gifts are used as bribe, to secure sex, attract attention and even atonement for misdemeanors. In the Western world, fathers instruct their sons thus: "when you've done her wrong, buy her flowers for flowers cover a multitude of sins."

Amusing, isn't it? For us over here, we are used to statements like "I will give you this, if you do that". This sounds more like striking a business deal than an expression of love. I genuinely entreat that we side step the abuse of the loving gesture of gift giving in our relationship.

Giving of gifts is a loving and sensitive aspect of our dad-to-day relationships and we must not hesitate to treat it like otherwise. We must avoid giving gifts passively, even dispassionately; else it will fritter away the value and impact of the gift.

If you take a while to reflect, you would come to understand a salient fact: that the gifts you treasure most in life have little have little or nothing to do with their worth or kind but the memories attached to them.

The reason, most times, is how and when the gifts came and and sometimes who the giver is. For this purpose, it is wise to acquire the know-how on gift-giving in order to make your gift leave a memorable impression and outlive its face value. These five magical keys will surely help:

  1. THE HOW
  2. THE WHEN
  3. THE GIFT
  4. THE RECEIVER
  5. THE GIVER
