An altar could mean several things but have to do with who built it and the reason why it was built. We know that an altar might be established not only to worship and sacrifice to the Almighty God but also to serve as a memorial. Man is an easy target to forget what the Lord has done in times past, and for this reason, an altar can be established as a way of remembering God’s works and faithfulness. A lot of times, God commanded the Israelis to never forget Him, His path, and His works.
Not only do altars of memorial lead to remember of what God has done in the past, but they also lead to remember God's promises and covenant with His children, particularly when they are at a point of difficulty. After getting triumph over the Amalekites, Moses established an altar for the special reason stated in Exodus 17:15-16:
Generations and generations after, we observe God remembering what He had sworn to do against the enemy of the Christian of Israel which was the Amalekites. As believers, it's important to build memorial altars. One good instance of a memorial altar is the altar of Holy Communion. Our Lord Jesus Christ commanded us to consistently partake of it in remembrance of Him. When we do this, we remind the Lord Jesus of His finished work on the cross of Calvary, and this stirs up His power against anything contrary to this finished work in our lives.
