Apostle James talks so much about the extent to which the tongue can go in destroying a fellow's destiny, in James 3:1-10. The tongue is for sure a fire, so it must be controlled. Controlled fire can be used positively but unrestrained fire destroys. The tongue is very wide that it could be described as a source that creates cold and hot water at the same time.
We should know that every problem of humankind has been settled on the cross of Jesus Christ. The story was told of a lady who was having issues in her marriage. The lady went to meet a wise old man in her family who gave her a very small smooth stone to slip into her mouth and lick, stay mute, every time her spouse picked a quarrel with her. The lady did as the man said and before long, peace came to that home.
The lady was happy and she ran to the wise old man to show her thank him for the effectiveness of what he gave her only for the man to tell her that what he had given her was a mere stone. He had just found a way to make her keep quiet rather than destroy her marriage with her mouth.
Choose to speak only words that will positive effect on the life of people and if you must correct someone, do it wisely and in love. All Christians must learn to guide their tongues because there is a time to talk and there is also a time to keep quiet When we talk, our words must be rightly spoken in due season.
