TEXT: COLOSSIANS 3:1-2

KJV:If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

WHAT DOES AFFECTION MEANS?

Affection is the feeling, love, passion, kindness a person expresses towards a particular thing.

Setting your affections on things above, simply means expressing love and passion for heavenly things. It also making the kingdom of God your number one priority and doing everything within your limit to be a partaker of heavenly inheritance.

Matthew 6:33
But seek ([z]aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness ([aa]His way of doing and being right), and then all these things [ab]taken together will be given you besides.

WHO CAN SET THEIR AFFECTIONS ON THINGS ABOVE.

1. Those who are born again

John 3:3
KJV:Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

1. Those who have renounced the love of earthly things.

1John 2:15-16
KJV:Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

1. Those who desire to be a vessel unto honor in the hand of God.

2Timothy 2:21
KJV:If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.

4.Those who desire to obtain the promise of eternal life.

1 John 2:25
KJV:And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life

SOME BENEFITS OF SETTING YOUR AFFECTIONS ON THINGS ABOVE

1. You will have freedom from sin

Romans 6:7
He that is dead is free from sin

1. God will always answer your prayers whenever you call on him.

Psalms 34:17-18
KJV:The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.

3.The Lord will supply all your needs

Philippians 4:19
KJV:But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

1. You shall reign with Christ when he appears in Glory.

Colossians 3:4
KJV:When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

CONCLUSION

Setting your affection on christ goes beyonds just going to church or merely professing your faith in Christ. It's about your commitment to christ as a daily routine and lifestyle. A man that has set is affection on things above will no longer be desirous of the mundane things of this world; but will make the kingdom of God his number one priority and will be ready to pay the necessary price to obtain the ultimate prize of salvation.
A resolved mind on things above is dead completely to sin and everyother worldly attractions.
