"Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and beat Him. And having blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?” And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him". (Luke 22:63–65)
Jesus was painfully mistreated by those who arrested Him. Though He had not been pronounced guilty of any crime, the soldiers treated Him as a convicted criminal. Both Jewish and Roman law were against mistreating people before trial. Yet, in the case of Jesus, the authorities abandoned all the rules of fairness and justice.
Our passage sets out a summary of the various acts of abuse that Christ suffered. It is always important to see the suffering of Jesus as both substitutionary and redemptive. He suffered in our place and also suffered to deliver us unto salvation.
He was Mocked. The soldiers holding Jesus ridiculed Him and sought to humiliate Him. They were determined to belittle Him before the onlookers who had gathered in the courtyards.
He was Beaten. Christ was randomly assaulted by those who took Him captive. They kicked Him with boots and gave Him body blows. Jesus bore all of this pain before receiving the lashes of the Roman scourge, which would tear the skin off His back.
He was Blindfolded. He was blindfolded so that He wouldn’t see and know those who committed this pre-trial crime against Him.
He was Slapped. Those who arrested the Lord hit His face very hard with their fists and open palms. With His eyes blindfolded, the soldiers struck Him from all angles, and sought to disorient Him. They chastised Him as they hit Him.
He was Blasphemed. That means that they shouted obscenities at Him. The soldiers insulted the Lord of Glory with the most horrible and reviling words of that time. They ridiculed the Holy One, who is worshipped continuously by angelic beings. The ears of Jesus that hear the most beautiful melodies of heaven listened to dirty words screamed at Him.
Jesus went through all of this to pay for the suffering of humanity. While going through all of this mistreatment, our Lord never complained or asked for mercy. He drank the cup of suffering for us so that through Him, we would find rest for our souls.
How great is the Love of Jesus for humanity to bear and pay with his holy and unequaled life the sin of the flesh of man and give us salvation and the opportunity to exist in eternal life. Thank you beautiful article brother.
