TEACH US TO NUMBER OUR DAYS

These words in Psalm 90 verse 12 would never have made more meaning to any discerning person than it has in the last one year with the enormous covid19 deaths and economic impact on the world. I have never seen so many people die around me so frequently and repeatedly in my entire life. As I write this piece, I am mourning the death of a young colleague who just passed two days ago. There are about three funerals, of close people to me, outstanding before he passed on.

Every hour, with the thought of these close family and friends who have passed in mind, I attempt to answer the question 'what should one really focus on?, seeing that as James 4:14 says 'you do not know what tomorrow will bring. what is your life? for you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.'

So I periodically recite and personalize that prayer in Psalm 90:14 'so teach me to number my days that I may get a heart of wisdom.' And I add, wisdom to understand that I own only the very second I have God's breathe, that He owns me and everything else I claim to own, and that in answer to my prayer to have His will done in my life, that He can ask me to 'return' whenever it pleases Him, despite my programs, plans and 'to-dos'

Let us live in gratitude to God, enjoy His provisions, but always remember that the ultimate prize is to gain salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord. Nothing else comes close and nothing else should compete with that target.
