In 1838 he received evening classes at the Royal School of Drawing in Christiania; under the tutelage of Flintoe.

In 1842 he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf as a student. At first, his works only dealt with landscape themes, since he did not master the creation of human figures. Later this situation changed, and Gude became a very complete painter, who not only dedicated himself to creating artistic works, but also became a teacher at the Düsseldorf Academy, from 1854; when he was 29 years old; being the youngest professor at the institution.

Gude was also a teacher at the Berlin Academy of Art, between 1880 and 1901.

He belonged to the Norwegian Romantic movement.

He died on August 17, 1903 in Berlin (German Empire).
