Wilkie studied art at the Edinburgh Academy. His first artistic performances were as a portrait painter. In 1805 he moved to London, where he held a successful exhibition at the Royal Academy.

In 1823 he was appointed painter to the King of Scotland. After this appointment he traveled to Italy, France, Germany and Spain.

In 1828 he returned to Great Britain and began to create works within the Renaissance and Baroque movements.

He decided to travel to Egypt and the Holy Land in 1840, with the purpose of creating works on religious themes. But he died on the return trip on June 1, 1841 and his remains were thrown into the sea.
