He received drawing classes from a very early age. When he was 17 years old he enrolled in the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. There he studied between 1875 and 1879.

Mønsted was fascinated by traveling and sharing experiences with other great artists. In 1882 he traveled to Rome and Capri. He then visited Paris, and there he worked in the workshop of master William Adolphe Bouguereau. In 1889 he visited Algeria. Then Greece. He was in Egypt and also in Spain. In his old age he lived in Switzerland and traveled throughout the Mediterranean.

His works were highly valued in Germany.

He died on June 20, 1941. At the age of 81 in Fredensborg (Denmark).
