Raytheon has presented a compact radar with an active phased array antenna, that will cost about half the price of existing radar stations and suitable for low-cost, disposable drones.
Active phased array radars (AFAR) can scan space at a higher frequency and detect airborne objects at a much greater distance than Pulse Doppler stations.
By changing the phases of the signals emitted by different transceiver modules, they form a powerful directional beam.
The antenna itself does not need to be rotated to control the radiation, so radars with AFAR have no moving parts, which simplifies their maintenance.
Raytheon has unveiled an active phased array radar that will cost about half the price and weigh 3 times less than existing solutions.
With a mass of 59 kilograms, it will be about 71 centimeters long and 37 centimeters wide.
Such a radar would be suitable for small aircraft like the Red Hawk training aircraft and inexpensive single-use drones, like the unmanned wingman Skyborg.
The company claims that its compact radar will have better performance than the current F-16 fighters.
Its transistor will be made of gallium nitride, not gallium arsenide as usual.
Therefore, the radar will be able to scan space with less energy and size.
Its antenna field will consist of 960 modules, and their number can be increased to 2.4 thousand.
