The companies Orca AI and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha have tested an autonomous container ship on a 790-kilometer route.
Orca AI said the ship was offline 99% of the time and made 107 maneuvers
The most famous examples of automatic vehicles are cars, but developers have also built planes to scooters and bicycles.
Ships are not the exception, however they are noticeably behind the others means of transportation.
There are already examples of autonomous small ships, which then cover thousands of kilometers.
However, container ships are still complicated. Just last year, a Norwegian ship that can accommodate 120 containers made its first voyage.
.
Then, last year, Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha decided to partner with Israeli company Orca AI.
The latter is developing autonomous propulsion and remote control systems for ships.
The companies just announced that their autonomous container ship made a 790-kilometer trip from Tokyo Bay to the city of Ise, Japan from February 26 to March 1.
(Orca AI)
The vessel, called Suzaku, is a 95-meter container ship with cameras and computers that allow it to analyze the environment and plot a route.
The system equipped by Orca AI allows the ship to respond in a timely manner to the movements of surrounding ships, which is especially important in busy ports.
A team of specialists is on the ship itself in case of errors. The container is also constantly under the control of remote operators.
In both cases, there are monitors in front of the people, which display both frames from cameras with marked information about the surrounding ships, and the parameters of the Suzaku itself.
Both companies note that 99% of the time the vessel moved independently, without manual control.
