Fellow photographers - During the many "lockdowns", we have had lots of time to revisit the images that we have made over the years - Some of us who have been in the "business" ever since the days of film and chemistry, and may have been able to "scan" those negatives that we remember as being "good". Here is the setup I devised for that purpose: I used my enlarger's glassless negative carrier to hold the negatives still in a vertical position - Then I clamped it to a studio stand at about 1 meter from a white wall, which could just be a large piece of clean white paper. Next, I set up my studio flash off on one side (left or right), to fire at the wall, at an angle of 45 degrees - On the digital camera, I put on a macro lens (in most cases the Canon 180mm L series lens) and with the camera on a tripod, focused on "the emulsion" side of the negative - This lens is 1:1 so the whole negative appears on the finder and pin sharp too. Try to use F16 to F22 to get the best focus and manual settings works best.
Once the digital image is ready, you can process in Camera RAW on PS and INVERT the image to positive for further refinement. Remember to FLIP the image as well

. Bottom line: Who needs an expensive scanner when the camera works perfectly well?
