My Styles of Editing, a Side-By-Side Comparison
The idea behind my Vibrant style of editing is to bring joy back into the picture. When I see an image for the first time, my mind must first be clear, I ensure my mind draws a blank by taking a couple breaths, calming down from the center outwards. As I open my eyes the information that gets passed to my brain must then identify what I am viewing, and then the result is an unbiased opinion of what I can see in front of me. Then I begin editing.
In order for joy to be given to an image you must think back to when you were happiest, that could be a time in your life where you were young & naïve, or even as a mature adult. Wherever and whenever you feel happiest there is usually a point of admirability towards that time, but there is always some factor that is present in every scenario. That factor is color.
Consider your favorite color and begin painting in your mind. Once you have your idea fully colored in your head, it translates onto the canvas, or in this case your photo. Even just adding a bit of color will brighten up your image and leave some flavor in the thoughts of your viewer.
Its easy to think that going the Minimalistic route is simply just adding to the exposure of the whole photo, but its more than that. Literally. I like to think that adding a Minimalistic style to any photo is like picking out the best features of that photo, and increasing its visibility, while decreasing its worst features. It might sound complicated at first but let me explain.
When you find a feature of an image you would like to expand upon, its more than just focusing on that one feature, and instead focusing on the whole image. It takes a little more brain power to figure out quantum mechanics or organic microbiology, but this is photo editing, and will be treated as such. Begin to view your image sitting down, then after 1 minute, stand up and look again. Take a couple steps back and look one more time. Did you notice anything different?
I just tried this technique as I was writing it, as ridiculous as I looked, I too noticed how I could make even the ‘post’ screen look better. These things make all the difference to your viewers. If you get anything out of this blog post, its that if you don’t notice the small things in your image your viewers certainly will. So do your best to stay on top of it, remember, its your photo 😊
