BEETLES

Beetles are a group of insects of the class Coleoptera. These are the most numerous species of insects. Coleoptera comes from the Greek word, meaning winged wing. Insects of almost all species have two pairs of wings. The front wing pair is stiff and thick. This pair protects the back pair and their abdomen.

Scientists estimate that there are about four million species of beetles in the world. They are found almost everywhere in the world except in the polar regions. They eat almost all kinds of food. Some species eat different parts of plants such as leaves, fruits, seeds or stems. Some species prey on smaller insects.

The female beetle lays insect eggs. The larvae emerge from the eggs, which have no wings. From larvae to pupae they do not take any food. From pupae they transform into insects. Beetles communicate with each other through the body's chemical secretions. Men identify women through body odor. They do not see very well with their eyes. Some insects produce sounds for communication. Fireflies are also a type of beetle. They communicate with each other in the dark.

Beetles can carry about 1,100 times their own weight. Beetles play a very important role in our ecosystem. Eating dirty waste, tree trunks helps them to decompose. Some species help in pollination by eating honey from flowers. Again, some species of beetles harm us. Insects that eat the crops destroy the crops of the land. Wood beetles cut and destroy wood.
