Heliconias are perennial herbaceous plants whose height varies from 70 cm to 10 m. The bracts are the most showy organs of a heliconia, they are generally of primary or mixed colors. Heliconias are of great importance to the florist. Its appearance is related to Crop taxonomy, botanical description and its floral biology, genetics and improvement. This plant groups more than one hundred tropical species, native to South America, Central America, the Pacific islands and Indonesia. They are called platanillo for their leaves or bird of paradise and lobster grind for the colorful bracts that surround their flowers.
