Do you know that there are thousands of people who are victims of racism in web3?
« Hating people because of their color is wrong. And it doesn’t matter which color does the hating. It’s just plain wrong »
- Muhammad Ali
Oh yes! I am one of them.
How was i a victim?
Let me explain.
Now I was once a community manager for a web3 NFT project called RyokoNFt.
It's actually the best project I have worked for over the years, they not quite popular but as the community/collab manager, it's the first project I worked for that sold out its collection.
While managing the community, I experienced racism.
It was really bad but as a community manager I had to make sure I didn't act irrational.
What really happened?
I was trying to pass a message to the community via discord AMA and for the first time, I disclosed my identity has a Nigerian and suddenly some of the community members left the session.
I approached one of the community members who was a Russian lady and I asked why she left and she said “I don't like Nigerains”.
It is important to recognize that racism, discrimination, and prejudice have no place in any community, including web3.
Racism is a serious issue that has plagued society for centuries. It is the belief that certain races are superior to others, and it manifests itself in many different ways, including discrimination, harassment, and prejudice. Racism is harmful not only to the individuals who experience it but also to society as a whole.
Web3 is a relatively new space that is still in its infancy, but it is rapidly growing and evolving. It is essential that we address the issue of racism early on to ensure that it does not become a pervasive problem in this space.
Here are five solutions to help curb racism in web3:
Education:
Education is key to understanding and addressing racism. Web3 communities can organize workshops, seminars, and other educational events to promote awareness and understanding of racism.
Community Standards
Web3 communities can establish clear community standards that explicitly prohibit racism, discrimination, and prejudice. These standards should be enforced consistently and fairly.
Diversity and Inclusion
Web3 communities can actively promote diversity and inclusion by encouraging the participation of people from different backgrounds and cultures. This can be achieved through targeted outreach and recruitment efforts.
Accountability
Web3 communities can hold individuals and groups accountable for acts of racism and discrimination. This can be done through community-led initiatives, such as reporting systems, and community-led investigations.
Communication
Open and honest communication is essential in addressing racism. Web3 communities can create safe spaces for people to discuss and share their experiences with racism. This can help promote understanding and empathy and lead to meaningful action.
Final words
Racism has no place in web3, just as it has no place in any other aspect of society.
It is up to all of us to work together to ensure that our communities are safe, welcoming, and inclusive for everyone.
By promoting education, community standards, diversity and inclusion, accountability, and communication, we can create a web3 community that is free from racism and discrimination.
