Do you smoke or know someone close to you who is addicted to cigarettes? Tell us about him.

I tell you, there are several people close to me who are addicted to cigarettes. Some experience serious addiction. If he smokes, he can smoke two to three packs per day. Gradually, he started to brake. Not as strong as before. Now he smokes just one pack a day.

What makes him reduce smoking activities may be because of the economy and the bad impact of Covid-19 which is currently hitting the world. However, he also had great determination to stop completely. However, he admitted that it was very difficult. Moreover, this is influenced by the environment. Because he has friends in his social circle who generally smoke as a fashion. Don't make smoking a necessity. Additionally, this is an initial requirement.

Because of this fashion smoking pattern, I was also influenced, because I am friends with many colleagues who generally smoke. I only smoke lightly so as not to become a passive smoker which is said to be very dangerous.

I only smoke when hanging out with friends. That's just one cigarette, after that, it's back to passive smoking. This condition is really uncomfortable. But, if we don't smoke, it's as if we don't "agree" to hanging out with them. Therefore, I was forced to do it. This sucks.

Do you know the causes and ways people become addicted to cigarettes?

People who are addicted to cigarettes are caused by social interactions. Although not everyone is affected, on average smoking starts from social interactions. Then, they try it and become addicted or hooked.

Another thing that causes smoking addiction is the belief that smoking can relieve stress. Or those who are office workers feel that smoking will improve their performance.

Therefore, many of these workers use cigarettes to relieve tension. This is what causes people to smoke, because of suggestions that have developed wildly in society in general.

Tell us about the negative impact of smoking on a person's mental and physical health.

I see that the negative impact of smoking from an economic perspective is much more severe than on a person's health or physical condition. Why is that? Economically, when he is addicted to cigarettes, he can sell any item to get a pack of cigarettes.

No rice at home is no problem, as long as it can be sucked smoothly. This is a big problem. Some people prioritize buying cigarettes rather than meeting basic household needs.

Especially for smokers from the middle to lower economic groups, most of their living expenses are usually spent on buying cigarettes. Imagine if the father smokes, the first child smokes, and the youngest, who has only been in junior high school for a year, also starts smoking. So you can be sure that many families' finances are spent on buying cigarettes. It's natural that expenses for buying rice, side dishes, vegetables, milk, and fruit are small.

Meanwhile, regarding physical or health matters, there are many anecdotes (jokes) circulating. There are government warnings that smoking can cause cancer, heart attacks, pregnancy and fetal problems and impotence. We can see posters on the anatomy of a smoker's body which are usually displayed on the walls of health centers, almost all organs of the human body can be damaged due to smoking habits. So it is not surprising that smokers are ageless people; because before he was old he had died due to complications caused by his smoking habit.

How to guide someone to quit smoking and return to normal life?

Inviting them is not enough just to call. There must be concrete steps such as avoiding association with people who smoke regularly.

Then take the person (smoker) to the doctor for a consultation. Or you can even use therapy to avoid the desire to smoke.

Another step that can be taken is to regularly invite him to do all activities that are far from smoking, and other positive activities such as exercising. Exercise can be an effective way to quit smoking.
