Greetings friends,

It's another day the lord has made and I am so privileged to be with you again. If you are in Nigeria, I hope you are strong and adapting to the new system?

Well, am here today to introduce my well respected elder to you. Someone I emulate, someone I aspire to be greater in life. Someone who motivate me whenever I remember her life story. It will be an honour if you walk through with me as I detail things about her.

Firstly, who is an Elder?

While growing up my mom would say to me "always obey your elder, do not insult your elders". It became a popular thing to me that whoever that is not of same age with me automatically is an elder. I grew with that mindset until my youthful age when we hear in church that their are some men and women who are called elder, and then I began to wonder if my elder brother was no longer my elder.

I engaged in an argument just yesterday with a friend about who is an elder. The person told me that until someone is 50 years of age, the person is not an elder. I made some researches and understood that anyone who is older than you are, is an elder. But in church, for you to attain an elder title, you must have attain 60-65 years of age. So in general, an elder is your older brother, older sister, older cousin, aunty, uncles, father, mother etc.

Do any of your elders live with you? What is his or her relationship with you?

None of my elders live with me currently but I have an elder I lived with at my adolescent age. My parents wished that I leave my environment and see what life looks like outside home. I stayed with her for a period of 3 -4 years before returning to my parents

She is my elder cousin and I love her so much. She was more like a mother to me. Staying with her was so much fun because we had a lot to eat, play, gist, do chores together and lots more. She was very nice to me. She never flogged me no matter what I do. When it was time for me to go back home, I didn't want to because the freedom I had there, I will not get at home.

How old is he or she? And what are his or her hobbies?

My elder cousin is currently 45 years of age but she looks way younger than her age. She enjoys reading a lot because she believes reader are leaders, watching movies especially "telemundo series", travelling etc.

Tell us about her behaviour with you and other members of the family

She is a lovable person. She behaves exactly like an elder. But not in a rude way, rather a polite manner. Her behaviour with me is as same as every other person, be it family or not. She is always doing things without stress. Most of the period she visited my home, she does the house chores even while am still sleeping. She sees it as nothing because it's in her. She settles quarrels at instant so that it doesn't escalate. And when she cooks, oh my God! The taste of the is so delicious.

Write a message to her to show your regards and love for her

Dear aunt,

How are you and the family? I believe your work is moving on well?. It has been a while since I last visited and saw the kids, probably because I am now an adult facing life with all my efforts.

I remember those times with you at calabar, it was really fun. We go out every weekend to have nice times. And I also remember you do not flog me even when I misbehave, why is that? Living with you was a dream I never wished to wake from. You have taught me so many things in life, one of which I practice in my everyday life.

Aunt, you are a sweet soul, very loveable creature designed by God. I know am no longer close to you but the love we share never dies. Your children will be so lucky to have a mother like you. I have not forgotten that game you taught me, I hope you still do remember? Even in my next life, I would choose you as my aunt. I love you always. Best regards.

Your love,
Ogadi.

You just read about my elder cousin whom I love so dearly. If you meet with her, you would love her. I hope you enjoy reading my post.

Its good to live with an elder who is polite like your aunt. The reason is, you will learn a lot from them and you will also enjoy their company .

Yes, well spoken. I so enjoyed my aunt that I wished she was my immediate elder sister.

Well to me too an elder is someone who isn’t just some one older than me but rather someone who has attained a good number of years in the world. Just like you said about 60 upward. Good luck to you

Exactly,,,, I appreciate your visit a lot.

Thank you

Thank you so much for the information

Depending on the setting and the context, an elder can vary. If it is in respect to title/position, an elder is someone who is older in age, and who has more life experience than you. In church, an elder is a title, in certain cultures, such as the Igbos, becoming an elder is a big title where ceremonies are even held. In the general context, anyone who is older than you, is your elder, so it depends on the context. We should not mistake an elder with a senior citizens who are old aged people.
