The theme of the contest Steem Witness is quite interesting. Before participating in the contest I had little knowledge about witnesses. I also submitted some votes for the witnesses but didn't know much about their contributions to the steem blockchain. Later I analyzed some articles about witnesses and I have some knowledge about them. Based on the contest I am presenting what I knew in a short while, but I need more time and more study on them to understand the entire scenario.

• Witness

A witness is a person who can supervise a server which can produce blocks. Witnesses use computers to produce a block and help to assemble the blocks to the blockchain.

• Witnesses role in the blockchain

Witnesses play an important role in the blockchain. A witness can produce blocks, and authenticate the transaction in the blockchain so the file's authenticity can easily be verified on Blockchain. Witnesses allow users to store and manage data securely through cryptographic encryption. In the case of Steem Blockchain, the blocks are created by a group of miners called witnesses. Steem blockchain accepts a protocol called Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) and which means the outcome of new blocks is delegated to some accounts and they are called witnesses. A steem witness operates a witness server through a computer that produces a block and connects those blocks with the blockchain and a block contains a lot of information about posts, comments, transactions etc. Witnesses have the opportunity to earn cryptocurrency through block creation rewards.

There are 100 witnesses on the witness list. To check the rank of witnesses you can use steemworld.org or you can easily visit the rank page by clicking the three-bar menu at the top of the right side of your profile icon. Select vote for witness option. Now you will get a new tab with the list of the top witnesses. By providing upvotes you can support any witnesses you like, just you need the active key to launch a vote for the witness. You can vote for a maximum of thirty witnesses.
