The dried fried fish locally named as "tuyô" or a sun-dried fish like herring or the sun-dried rabbit fish locally called as "Danggit".


Yesterday, my mother had prepared some chocolate rice porridge and some dried fish to have it with as our breakfast meal. It is our traditional chocolate porridge here in my country and can be eaten as a snack or breakfast as we did. This local foodstuff is made by boiling some sticky rice variety in water to make a not so very think consistency or depending on your preferences. But beforehand or while you are cooking the sticky rice in a pot, you will also prepare the chocolate powder by mixing sugar and cocoa powder together which afterwards to will pour in the boiling sticky rice so that the powder will not clump together while stirring the porridge mixture.

It will depend on you on how the porridge will end-up if it is thick or thin, with mild chocolate flavor or a strong chocolate taste, or what brand of chocolate powder you will use either the commercially available ones like a Ricoa cocoa powder or a much better-tasting ground cocoa beans which we locally call as "Tablea" , or how sweet it will be as well. After cooking, it will be served either with some condensed milk or an evaporated milk to make it taste much better. I prefer it with some condensed milk because condensed milk from a can taste better in my opinion although we can also use powdered milk.

Some people also use a coconut cream as an alternative to the milk like what my godmother was doing when she would sell a big vat of it to our barrio's primary school when I was just a pupil there four decades ago actually when she was still here because it was her way of making a living until she went to the states where she is still staying until now. Anyway, I guess that my godmother would only use the coconut cream as a replacement to the more expensive condensed milk or evaporated mil because coconuts are quite a cheaper alternative during those years but now they are both expensive to buy because of inflation.

Anyway, our traditional chocolate rice porridge can be paired with some dried fish which is salty in taste and it is actually a delicious combination as the salty taste of the fried dried fish cuts the sweet taste of the porridge itself and is always commonly served in homes rather than common eateries which sells chocolate rice porridge because common vendors or side-street restaurants are not offering the combination to cut costs. chocolate rice porridge is better made at home because we can make it to be the best that we can to get a better product because we can control the consistency and also the richness of the chocolate taste rather than having a watered-down version which common vendors would offer where you can almost drink the porridge that they are selling because they are more than profit-oriented rather than serving people the best type of chocolate porridge that they can have plus with a died fried fish to make the breakfast or snack meal a complete gastronomic experience.
