Day on Kilva
"No preamble today" — none
The main purpose of our trip was to examine the ruins of the former Arab rule, protected by UNESCO. At one time, Arab traders and other adventurers of all stripes suddenly decided to choose a Sultan for themselves. In this simple way, an Arab sultanate emerged on the islands off the coast of Tanzania. The Arab colony successfully reaped the benefits of trade and existed blissfully until the arrival of the Portuguese. These gentlemen, according to tradition, made an offer to the living Sultan, which he, in theory, could not refuse. But for some reason the Sultan stubbornly sabotaged cooperation with the EU... he was so stupid, he just didn’t want to embrace the value of the euro. Then the Portuguese invited him to see a modern Portuguese military merchant ship. The Sultan, of course, did not return from the excursion.
The era of Portuguese rule was beginning, which later (after the Portuguese were given a kick in the ass) would be replaced by decline and ruin...
The local guide prepared us an entertainment program that we did not dare refuse. The first act of the action was supposed to be on the island of Kilwa Kiswani, the second - on the island of Songa Mnara, the intermission - between them, on the island of Kati in the "buffet" of the fishing village...
The first part of the excursion program took place in the afternoon under favorable weather conditions. Local comrades transported our motley group to the island using a covered boat with a motor, which in itself was already a pretty cool attraction. The remains of a mosque from the 10th-11th centuries, fragments of the Sultan's palace and a coastal bastion have survived to this day... if you use your imagination, you can, in principle, paint a picturesque picture of life in a small Arab emirate at the beginning of the birth of Islam.
The islands are full of life. Such a variety of flora and fauna can rarely be observed anywhere. A mess of crustaceans, bugs, worms is simply teeming under your feet... parachutes of baobab fruits are falling on you from above. Have you ever seen a baobab tree reproduce?
That,s all for today.
Stand by
Sincerely yours
