Westminister

I don’t get into central London very often as it’s a bit chaotic for me, but when I do, I’m always blown away by the amazing architecture around Westminster. There is very little as impressive as Parliament.

The first royal palace at the site of Westminster was built in around 1045 by Edward the Confessor, at the same time as Westminster and during the medieval period functioned as the principle residence of England’s monarchs.

A fire in 1512 destroyed the royal quarters and king Henry VIII, the current monarch moved the royal family out of the Palace of Westminster and into the Palace of Whitehall, this left Westminster as a place for only Parliament duties and the royal law courts.

Over the years it has burnt down and be rebuilt and restored numerous times. It has really had a very colourful life.
