Hello Everyone, I'm Rezzy and I'm here with a contest Post titled [Travel-related Trip] for the host @hive-111293
In the contest, we are asked to write about our experiences when we went on an educational trip. We all, in our line of study must have went on some kind of journey where we acquired knowledge formally or for pleasure. In my case, it was a formal trip, where my department of Geology went on a Geologic field trip.

The JOURNEY🚌 (inter community travel in Niger State, Nigeria)

We began the journey from the School premises, where we would all meet and take the attendance for the students present (sign-in), we would then enter a bus provided by the school in order to reach a distance much nearer to the field of observation (because not all Geologic features are present in our domestic environment). We drove for about 2 and a half hours passing many little communities on our way with few stops for water and the petrol station ⛽. After the bus had reached the destined area, the students and supervisors alight from it and walk several kilometers through the location, observing and collecting data as we move. GEOLOGIC FIELD TRIP🔨

A Field trip exercise maybe completed in a few days depending on the data required, Geolgists and undergraduate geologists around the world go on one or two field trips yearly for the purpose of examining rocks (primary and secondary structures of rocks, textures and composition of the rocks), direction of certain rock features, water bodies etc.. the observation of this rocks or strata, and the fossils sometimes found in them allows geologists to infer to the past the processes that occured then which later formed the present.

The field trip pictures posted above occurred in my second year at the University, I'm in my 3rd year right now but we are yet to go on our 3rd year field work.
When on such an Educational journey, undergraduates like me are meant to abide by certain rules in order to ensure our safety and a successful operation. Some rules were:

• Student ID cards must always be put on for easy identification
• Not wandering far away from the group
• No playing of music or video games
• No usage of perfumes in order not to attract wild animals by pleasant smell
• No earphones allowed in order not to restrict communication
• No eating of the fruits found on the outcrop or location to avoid stomach upsets
• Complete set of geologic tools must be brought to the field work, some of the common undergraduate Geologic tools are; geologic hammer (used for breaking of rocks to collect samples for examination i.e reduction of sample size), graded boots (boots with a rough sole that is best for climbing up and down of slippery and slopy hills), compass 🧭 (used to obtain bearing and users present location), hand lens (comes with a special light that's used for examination of rocks crystals closely), a jacket for keeping the tools, an helmet, gloves, geologic field book(for collection of Data) etc...

Note: the quality of a good geologists lies in how well he/she can make use of the tools in order to acquire correct data for a successful field work (for example: a good geologists must know how to operate a compass in order to prevent getting lost in the wild or outcrop which is usually far away from Civilization)

• Faults: "Faults, in geology, is a planar or gently curved fracture in the rocks of Earth’s crust, where compressional or tensional forces cause relative displacement of the rocks on the opposite sides of the fracture. Faults range in length from a few centimetres to many hundreds of kilometres, and displacement likewise may range from less than a centimetre to several hundred kilometres along the fracture surface (the fault plane)."-Source-Britannica

Additional Information

• At the end of everyday of the field trip, attendance is taken to ensure no student is missing (signing in and out)
• Rock samples collected during the excercise are then examined in the laboratory using a petrographic microscope i.e Petrography, which is the description and examination of rocks especially by use of microscopes.

• The data collected during the excercise is then gathered and organized in a table for proper interpretation (sometimes a graph is drawn)

CONCLUSION

Field trips are important for a geologist although it's very strenuous, as without the practical excercise, there won't be proper understanding of what is taught in the classroom. The field trip enables geologists to understand the physical and chemical changes occuring within the rocks and the environment as a whole.
