MEANING OF CITIZENSHIP

The term citizenship is a suffix-added word, the original word there is citizen while the "ship" is a suffix that means "state of being". "Ship" is originated from the Old English word "scipe" which means "shape". A citizen is someone who is from a particular community, state or country.

Citizenship is the state of being an indigen or community, state or country. I am a citizen of Nigeria as per country, a citizen of Akwa Ibom as per State and a citizen of Ata Obio Akpa in Oruk Anam as per community. You are a citizen of where you come from either by birth, by registration or by marriage.

HOW TO BECOME A CITIZEN

There are several means of becoming a citizen of a particular place. Different countries have different requirements for citizenship. I will explain one major qualification for citizenship which is "citizenship by birth". Every human being is given birth to by a woman(mother). So when one gives birth to a child in a particular country, that child automatically becomes the citizen of that country.

Whether you reside in a country or not, once you give birth in that country, your child becomes a citizen there. This particular qualification is recognised by countries like Nigeria, Canada, USA, United Kingdom, Pakistan, Hong Kong, etc. This is the reason I told myself that if God blesses me and I have the capacity to travel outside Nigeria for my baby delivery, I will birth all my children in United State of America or Canada. These two countries gives automatic citizenship to children that are born there.

THREE DUTIES OF A CITIZEN

Citizens have responsibilities and duties towards their community, state, country or even their fellow citizens. When citizens fulfill their duties, they contribute to the progress, prosperity, growth and success of the their society. These duties provide a foundation for responsible citizens and there are;

1. Voting Duty: Voting is the process of supporting a particular person during election. Election is the period when a leader is being chosen by the citizens. Every citizen has the right to vote during election. By voting citizens exercise their influence over government policies and decisions. It is a powerful tool that allows citizens to shape their country and their destiny. The growth and success of a nation depends on the kind of leader we vote for during election.

2. Obeying The Laws: Laws are laid down instructions that guides people on how to live their lives in the right way. It promotes justice and ensure the well-being of the society. Every citizen must understand the rules and regulations of their country and obey them. As citizens we must respect authority, report crimes and lead by example to encourage others obey the laws.

3. Volunteering: Volunteering is an important duty of a citizen that enriches the community. It strengthens community bonds and addresses social issues like education, healthcare, environmental conservation and poverty.

Volunteering to teach in schools, environmental organisations and community centers is a way of fostering community spirit and fulfilling your duties as a citizen.

Steemians are citizens of steemit, what makes someone a steemian?

Steemians are citizens of Steemit. After signing up with steemit and our account is approved we become steemians and we start engaging with the activities on the platform. But what really qualifies us as responsible steemians are:

1. Our ability to obey the laid down rules on the platform and take corrections where necessary.

2. We must perform some duties like voting others and engaging actively with other peoples's posts.

3. Respecting other steemians is an important task for every steemian.

4. We must support community growth and success.

5. We must encourage effective communication and avoid any form of conflict.

6. Learn and develop ourselves in the platform.
