Hello, I hope everyone is doing fine here. I am also fine. Today, I want to share an experience I had during my trip on Sierra Leone road from Bo to Freetown this month of November. Something strickes my attention on express road. At first, I thought its a masquerade performance on the road. When I got nearer, I observed the true reality that we are struggling with in Sierra Leone,-poverty.
The scene reminds me of what we go through in Africa just to have food on our tables and a sad reality that we sometimes endanger our lives in the process.
What is it?
As an individual with a sound mind, I could not help but start meditating on what could happen if the suspected masquerade continues for a long time on my lane on the express road. Little did know that what looked like a masquerade was really a vehicle with potatoe bundle with leaves, on an old Toyota pick-up van going on a very slow speed to the farm.
Lessons learned;
The scene no doubt brought many concerns about safety of the driver and other individuals( if any)? How would the driver know and see vehicles coming from behind like mine? The car tires were almost covered, how would drivers from behind even recognize that this is a vehicle in front of them? From Bo chech-point to the next check point is over a 100 km, only God knows how long this driver will be on that road without caution from road safety official before he reaches his farm. If I had the opportunity, I would have suggested that he takes quantity that will conviniently fit in the van for two or more time than risking his life way he did.
The truth remains that our struggle in Sierra Leone continues and that positive spirit is of importance, resilience and determination to fight hunger and poverty through hard work is a way to success in a place like Sierra Leone, unwavering spirit when facing challenges of hardship in our land is commendable. However, all these would be fruitless endeavors without safety. Safety first will help the driver to return home to his family and continues to care for them.
The experience reminds me to be safety conscious first, and hard working in whatever thing wholesome that I engage in, if I am to survive in this hard times difficult to manage.
