My hubby and I in our traditional wedding day

Traditional clothes are not just wears, yes they are Not just for covering nakedness, they are a source of information about ethnological origin and historical events. It is a way of life of people that is why clothes are develop according to cultures and religious believes.

Over here in Nigeria people are dressing according to Their ethnicities, And we have 3 major ethnic groups in Nigeria; The yorubas, the Igbos and the Hausa.
Recalled the way clothing is designed is especially affected by religious beliefs for example the yorubas are mixed with Christians and Muslims, Igbos are mainly Christians while Hausa are mainly Muslims. This are the major religious group in Nigeria.

This two religious group expect everyone both men and women to be modest in dressing and grooming. Though Muslim expect their women to cover all their body parts.

Traditional wears in Akwa Ibom:

In my state Akwa Ibom and my religious belief there’s no certain rule for dressing. We only follow the principles of modesty.

Our traditional wedding attire

But our traditional wears are graceful and exotic it communicate our culture. I am an ibibio and our culture is excellently rich and we still follow almost all our traditions and beliefs which was introduced by our ancestors.

My cousin Sister on her traditional wedding day

When it comes to fashion we don’t come last and we use to prefer our traditional attires especially if we want to attend a special occasion like traditional marriage or wedding etc.

Traditional attires for ibibio men contains:
  • The traditional wrapper(usobo)
  • The chieftain shirt
  • Accessories

my in-law on his traditional wedding day

Usobo (a traditional wrappers worn by ibibio men) to events but especially a wedding event. The wrapper is an ankle-long chunk fabric it’s normally wrapped to have a skirt look-a-like, some traditional adornments are on it.
This kind of fabric is also used by other ethnicities such as the oron and the efik tribe.

The chieftaincy shirt is an important part of our mode of dressing for our men. It normally made of either plain material or lace. If it’s plain material it will have some sort of design on the chest. The length of the shirt is usually knee long. Speaking of the accessories for our men traditional attire I can point out a few which includes traditional caps, hats, canes, beads etc.

Traditional attires for women:

Have you seen our attires before? They are simply beautiful, very graceful, gorgeous, exclusive and magnificent, it consists of the numerous parts;

  • Short sleeveless blouse(itong ofong)
  • Traditional wrappers (ndot iba)
  • Accessories (nkwa itong)

My cousin Sis

As for the blouse we use to sew it according to our taste, it can be completely open shoulder, ones that held straps, three quarter hands etc. moreover they can be adorn with different adornments.

For traditional wrappers (ndot iba) it’s very popular now and the fabric is simply elegant, we normally tied the first one on our ankle then we will tie the second for the length to stop at knee level.

The Price Of The Attires:

The above attires cost is base on the quality of each materials, the prices range from 10,000 - 150,000 Naira which approximate 63 - 937 Steems. One normally chooses what he or she can afford.

Durability Of The Attires:

The durability Of each attire is dependent on the quality of the material, for example mine is 6 years now and it still looks new.

Our accessories includes head gear, beads etc.
You see, each tribe have it’s traditions and culture and when it comes to traditional attires ibibio own is one of the best it is fashionable, unique and gorgeous. Most importantly moderate!!

I absolutely LOVE your traditional wear.
It is truly something I miss as a white South Africa.
We have Westernized, don't have folk dancing or anything like that anymore. Such a pity.
PS: Thank for the invitation and good luck with the contest!

How sad 😢 so sorry about this indeed it's a pity! most part of African continent is westernized, we've completely lost our culture & traditions, but life goes on! Let's hope for the best, I appreciate your good wishes!
