I think, we had a similar contest like this recently as well, where we had to write about our profession. Reading the contest announcement post, I realized this will be a good oppurtunity to let the world know about my profession from a different perspective. So here I am.

I try to spread smiles. No, I am not a joker or a comedian or a person who cracks random jokes. No wait, I am a person who cracks random lame jokes, but that's my side job hahaha. But what is my job? What do I do? Well, I check people's teeth on daily basis, I clean them, extract them and even try to make new set of teeth. Did you guess who am I as a professional? Yes, you guessed it right. I'm a Dentist.

In this post, I'll be writing all about my job:

DENTIST

I'm an aspiring dental Surgeon who wishes to be the very best. But it's a funny story, I am not sure if I have mentioned it before but it always makes me laugh and makes me wonder the decisions of God as well.

I hated dentists, infact I regarded them as useless people. My elder brother is also a dentist. From childhood, I wanted to be a neurosurgeon. The brain has always fascinated me. Like how the entire body is controlled by a single organ. How all actions are originated from a single place. So, it was fascinating to me.

We have a medical university admission test known as MCAT. A few months before mcat I visited my brother's university, where I am currently enrolled, for scaling. There I met with his friends and they asked me on my opinions of choosing dentistry as a profession. There I said a sentence which has haunted me eversince.

A Dentist? No, Never. I can never be a dentist. Even if I have nothing else to do in life, I'll never opt for Dentistry.

I guess, it was 3 months after this incident, I emded up doing BDS. It wasn't a choice, rather a compulsion. I couldn't get admission in MBBS. I opted for MBBS in Germany, where I was enrolled but my mother had second thoughts. On the day of my Visa Receiving process, I received a call from this University where I am studying right now and they informed me that I have successfully secured a seat for BDS program. My mom considered this as a sogn from God and here I am.

I didn't like BDS at first. Infact it took me 2 years to fall in love with dentistry and now I am extremely proud of being a dentist. Everyday, it's a new oppurtunity of giving people back their smiles. Everyday, I spread awareness on how to keep one's oral cavity healthy. It's a beautiful profession. But being in this profession, I realized how underprivileged and uneducated the common population is.

My daily tasks include informing people the affects of consuming betel nuts, cigarettes, and other harmful things. Apart from that I restore multiple teeth in a day. It's truly a blessing that God has chosen me as a mean of spreading smiles on other people's faces. Apart from that, Extracting teeth is also a part of this job. The best thing that I like is restoring teeth. Teeth which have a little or no hope left. Restoring these sort of cases is Wonder as the patient leaves with a big broad smile on his/her face.

Everyday, I diagnose patients with irreversible pulpitis, squamous cell carcinoma, mouth cancer and various other life threatening conditions. To keep it easy for you, Pulpitis refers to a condition im which your pulp of the tooth gets inflammed (swollen) the pulp is surrounded by a rich Network of blood vessels, nerves and tissues, this causes excruciating pain to the person experiencing it. You can't have food, you can't drink water, have tea, eat ice cream or basically you're deprived of all the things in this world. The solution for this condition is getting your Root Canal Treatment or worse, extraction of the affected tooth. But wait, there's more to it, the pain can radiate, and the condition can be extended to the neighboring teeth as well which worsens the condition.

This is a clinical picture of a patient that I had in the Protho OPD. This person had no teeth and we had to make a removable prothesis for him. He was quite happy with the results.

But it's not always work being a dentist. There's a lot of fun work as well. Such as sitting peacefully and listening to the stories of aged patients. Or when Children are scared in the OPD and you have the job of pacifying them. Or sitting with senior dentists and listening to their experiences and success stories.

I have two sides and you can see both of them in the pictures above. It's either:

  • F this shit, I don't care about my future or anything, let me just enjoy my life
  • writing down the complaints of the patient sincerely and thinking of the perfect treatment plan for them.

There's nothing between these two. But, I am always sincere to my patients. I have never done injustice to any of my patients as they deserve the very best. A few days back, I was thinking that I as a dentist get tired sometimes after having 15 patients a day but that 16th patient who comes to me doesn't know that. He doesn't know that I am tired. He's expecting good treatment. So for that, I have to be at my very best. It gets hectic sometimes

There are complications in everything and the major complication found here in this reguon related to my profession is lack of awareness. People think of dentists as their enemies who are charging hefty fees. Little do they know that dental treatment in real is expensive. The material is expensive. It's extremely time and energy consuming but people don't really care about all this.

For future, I would like to change a couple of things in my profession. First of all, I'd work towards spreading awareness all over Pakistan. I'm already doing that. Yesterday I came back to my home after a 7 day tour in which set up a free dental camp in Hunza. Hunza is located atleast 2000 kilometers from Karachi,ie, where I live. So I can proudly say that I am playing a part in spreading awareness. Secondly I want people to have a regular checkup at dentists. If you're regularly visiting a dentist, it would cut down your dental treatment expensive drastically. Wanna know how? Due to regular checkups you'll treat small infections or diseases which Don't cost much compared to lengthy procedures which become necessary if you neglect your oral hygiene.

CONCLUSION

So, that was all about my job. I hope you had a good read, I'd like to invite my friends @enveng @nadiaturrina and @wajihasheikh to take part in this contest.
Regards

Hahaha indeed you're a funny dude, dentistry is one of the great fields in medecine. I love it so much coz the teeth are most times neglected meanwhile if not we'll taken care of, the pain is unbearable especially when it touches the nerve endings. You are doing a great job sir! I love your passion to "literally" put smiles on people's faces as that of that only man I can imagine his joy

Thank you brother for calling me a funny dude. Mission accomplished, hahaha. Yes indeed, as I like to call it, teeth are the most important yet the most neglected part of the body

We will obviously take more important notice of our beautiful enamels😅 when things will get tough and one will have difficulties of chewing meat then they will understand 🤣

When things start to get tough and your enamel starts to get weak thats when you rralise shit's getting real. That's when you realize you should've taken care of your teeth with time 🤣🤣

Exactly 🤣

Saludos 🤗
