What You Should Know About PFAS aka (Forever Chemicals)

It turns out that I was trying to make some pan cakes and got all my ingredients right, it was supposed to be simple and elegant. To reduce the amount of calories in the pan cake, I reduced the quantity of oil which resulted in the whole thing getting stuck to the pan and loosing the round beautiful shape that makes the pan cake attractive. It was a category 3 catastrophe.

The Idea Of a none sticky Pan

Looking at the mess that resulted from my attempt to make the pan cakes with very little oil, I just wished I had one of this none sticking pans. With it I would have successfully made the pan cake with even less oil.
While in that moment of grieve, it came to me like an epiphany "why not buy one?". And yes! yes!! yes!!! That was just the solution and I remember seeing it displayed in shops that sale used items like steam irons, hot plates, none sticky utensils and microwave ovens.
While planning to visit one of this shops to get one, my curiosity started asking questions.

Why Wouldn't it stick on this pans ?

I Poked on Google and the answer I got was "Teflon" also known as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) these are man made synthetic chemical made up of chains of carbon and fluorine atoms. It was first discovered accidentally around the 1930s and because of its nonreactive and nonsticking nature, it was used to coat the surfers of tanks, preventing them from getting dirty or rusted.

The application soon found its way into the kitchen. Used to coat the surface of pots and pans making them none sticky, easy to wash and excellent for making pan cakes. Because this material is resistant to heat, water and light it earned a place among a group of materials nicknamed forever chemical because they almost do not disintegrate.

Effects on health

Later it's application went far beyond the kitchen. And soon enough red flags were raised, due to the fact that the production of none sticky Teflon utensils involved the use of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) a chemical substance investigated for the possible causes of infertility and other health crisis like, thyroid disorders, some chronic diseases of the kidney, liver and longs. Its also responsible for a type of cancer that affects the testicles, and it's a leading course of various birth defects.
Once the Teflon pan gets to temperatures approaching 260°C, it gives off some toxic chemicals, "Inhaling these fumes may lead to polymer fume fever, also known as the Teflon flu." source

Other Areas of Application

It's none sticky nature makes it the ideal material for raincoats, and other waterproof materials used in making tent covers.
They are a key ingredient in the production of face makeup that can stand rain or sun.
They are also available in other products like cleaning agents and any other material that contain Teflon.
Because they do not decompose, they have leach and percolated through the soil and into our water.
They are used in producing muffin pans that do not stick so you don't have to scrape.
PFAS are also used in firefighting foams used in suffocating fire.
According to medicinenet.com, "The manufacturing of PFOA and some of its closely related chemicals have been stopped in the United States."source

Conclusion

  • If you must use one of this pans, make sure you observe the medium to low heat standard that helps avoid the temperature that results in its giving out toxic fumes.
  • Do not use old Teflon products, any Teflon utensil older that 2013 will contain PFOA chemicals.
  • Avoid using a metal spoon when cooking with a Teflon pot or pan to avoid scraping it into your food.
  • If your cooking will need high temperatures, then make use of other none sticky alternative like stainless steel or cast iron cookwares.
  • Avoid food packaging that has a Teflon none sticky layer on the inside.
  • unfortunately, it's like everything is becoming a threat to our lives and a fools paradise seen to be the only place we can have a measure of peace.

Though this chemicals are toxic to our health, they also make your kitchen experience a more pleasant experience. Educating the public is the best way to help people avoid getting poisoned by this things we have in our homes.
