Citizenship means the regal relationship between an individual and a nation or state. It grants an individual certain rights and responsibilities as a member of a political community. Citizenship can be understood in so many ways such as legal status, rights, and civil participation. Being a citizen of a country gives you the legal right to participate in the affairs of the country.

The key aspects of citizenship are; legal status and rights. Legal status establishes a formal connection between an individual and the nation, state, or place of birth. Right is typically enjoyed by citizens in so many ways such as the right to worship, vote, and do other things.

How can one become a citizen of a country? Explain one way.

One can become a citizen by birth or registration. Becoming a citizen of a country by birth is the easiest way one can become a citizen. For example, my parents are from Nigeria and I was born in Nigeria which automatically means I am a full citizen of Nigeria. Also, had it been I given birth in another country aside from Nigeria I would have become a citizen of the country I was given birth to and still be a citizen of Nigeria meaning I hold dual citizenship of the country I was given birth in and the country of my parents.

Explain 3 duties of a citizen.

A citizen of a country comes with the following obligations which I have named and explained.

  • Paying taxes
  • Obeying the law
  • Serving on juries

Paying taxes: A citizen is obligated with the duty of paying taxes to the government for the development of the country. A citizen who owns a business is mandatory to pay his or her taxes at the due time.

Obeying the law: A citizen is charged with the responsibility of obeying the law of his country. Such laws include respect, staying out of trouble, avoiding stealing, participating in an election, and so on. A citizen must not be a law beaker.

Serving on juries: A citizen must be ready to serve his country whenever he or she is been called to do so. A citizen must love and care for his country, nation, or state. Also, a citizen is charged with the duty of engaging in community service or advocating for social and political causes.

Moderation note: Wonderful write up.

You're right, the commonest method of being a citizen of a country is through birth, that's why citizenship by birth is usually the highest means of being a citizen.

Best wishes!
