Be strongly advised!
The whole movie was centered about Faith and how easy it can get corrupted because of our relentless yearnings for miracles and wonders. What wouldn't humankind trade their souls for just to get.
Spearheaded by the very annoying and badass villain Jeffrey Dean Morgan who played the role “Negan” from “the walking dead” movie series. I must confess, he’s what spurred my interest in the movie at first. Just before downloading, I thought to myself, “Negan?”, oh no! this can’t be good. I only just realized at that point that I have grown to having a deep distaste for him because of the role he played in “the walking dead” series. Though he became a changed guy somewhere along the series. He used to be a bad guy too in “the unholy” who later became a changed person. It feels good being reminded of the fact that people can still change. Ahahaha!
It started with a very strong caption “Be careful who you pray to”, and while it might not make much sense just yet, simply dive right into the movie and find out why.
Intro to the Movie
The opening scenes confronted us with Demon Trapping in a girlish doll. The Doll had been placed in a small opening at the foot of a dried-out tree where the incident had taken place, some time in 1845. The doll was very unlike other dolls that are supposed to bring good luck as it was fully wrapped up in chains with a very impossible date inscribed on it (February 31st). Back to their present-day time where Jeffrey Dean Morgan who played Gerry Fenn- a used-to-be renowned journalist who’s now seen as a piece of joke by many, came across the field where the tree under which the 1845 doll was placed. His lack of faith, unrepentant smirk against fallacies and superstitions, and a quick reflex to smash the doll against warning from a farmer in the field, soon opened the small town to a manifestation strictly veiled in deceit and a power beyond their immediate comprehension. This they realized in a bit by bit unraveling after Cricket Brown- a deaf & dumb Alice was found in the woods and had a supposed visitation from the Virgin Mary who healed her so she can hear and speak. Something she has never done before.
After a series of miracles, they were almost led to believe it was really God and the Virgin Mary at work, but they found something else instead, someone else!
Favourite Quotes from The Movie
I do have a list of favourites; “Be Careful Who You Pray To”, “We Are In An Eternal Battle Between Good And Evil”, “Wherever God Goes The Unholy Follows”, "Doubt Weakens Faith", "Faith In Evil Empowers Evil", and “When God Builds A Church The Devil Builds A Chapter Next-Door”, this last one in particular was said by Martin Luther King (Jnr).
Movie Preference
I have watched quite a number of movies this 2021, but I must say this is far from being my most enjoyed thriller or horror movie. There’s almost nothing we’ve not seen on screens before. Though they tried so hard to repackage the many plot repetitions out there, and they were successful, at least to a degree. However, midway into the movie, you can see them fall apart bit by bit until we are all left with the regular junk-plot almost everyone is eventually tired of.
The unholy was produced by the same producer of Evil Dead & Don’t Breathe (Sam Raimi), what a great guy. I’ve watched both to know “the Unholy” to be the exception from the trio. All are great movies, but when it comes to handpicking the most interesting, I will pick either of the two before I pick “the Unholy”.
Rating
The Unholy 2021 most certainly pass for an average horror movie. Because of half ingenuity, and the fact that they pulled this lot up without feeding us with a total load of crap I would perhaps give it a 3.5 / 5.0.
Movie Trailer
The movie trailer had me right by the balls, but not sure if it will appeal to you the same.
