MAN AND HIS ENVIRONMENT

He finds himself in a world surrounded by company. His environment accompanies him with both living and non-living organisms. The hills, the mountains, the alps and the valleys, the seas, rivers and the oceans, the height and the depths, all seem to be at his service.

The venal air caresses him to his pleasure, the golden sunshine brightens his night.

When he launches into the deep, the inhabitants are curious of this stranger, when he ventures into the wild, behold attention is drawn to him by himself. Who is he?

Gifted with consciousness and self-consciousness, even with rationality by which he deduces and induces to his uncovering and discovery of things which seem to assure and reassure him of more, had made himself a master of knowledge through which he could conquer his neighbors and enthrone himself the lord of his environment. He is man. Protagoras the philosopher calls him the measure of all things, thus he would have himself unrivaled by his neighbors and seeks control over all and sundry. This desire for supremacy has led him to think less of his neighbors but for their importance to him. But his knowledge seem not to grasp fully his environment. It seems that another master had beaten him in the game. Alas! For he knows not how ignorant he is.

He saves his environment to its destruction; for his neighbors, he cares to care not. He kills the trees to make himself furniture,

yeah, he mortifies the goat, the chicken, the cow, et cetera, for the fun of his belly, and the coat of some of them has been his cloak. Thus he defined himself an enemy of all this his neighbors, but they loved him. The plant ceases not to give him oxygen nor does the earth fail to produce for him vegetation though he destroys them, so he abounds but they abase.

Though he has a leader yet no order, know he not that the ant is rich in this? Learn the ways thereof and be wise, O man! You seek peace? Then consult the dove, for subtlety, go to the serpent, loyalty in service? Learn from the camel. Love these neighbors. But would he? When he discovered the strength of the lion, then he knew that he was not as strong as he had thought. This ignorant master of knowledge learned to be humble, for he has come to know the value of some of these precious creatures that are his neighbors and this has led him to adopt the dog, the cat, et cetera, as close friends amongst them all, and they have proved their loyalty and value to him.

How ignorant I have been! He thought to himself.
This realization of ignorance led him to be friendly with his neighbors who have revealed a lot to him, both about themselves and the environment, which he knew not nor could have without them. His admission of humility has produced in him the moral awakening which he needs to live in this bio-centric community of creatures of divers kinds which he is a member and not a master. We are man.

Maybe if we had been a little reasonable, or perhaps had been better neighbors, we would have been better friends, and if we are, we could be a family - a big global happy family. What a world-family that would be!
