The university is now your home away from the normal home you grew up to know. Herein;
There is no adult-parent, teacher, elder etc to police you around. You are the adult yourself. So you decide whether to wake up early to meet up with your morning lectures or miss out.
Teachers are called lecturers. No extra care from lecturers whether you are passing, failing or missing class. On your own, you go for help when you need one
There is so much free periods in the university but few lecture hours. For one lecture hour, put in two study hours.
There are no structured notes to be copied on the board. You make notes from the lecturers' "talk", take scanty dictations, buy handouts and read up the topics yourself. You're expected to read and make your own notes.
There might not be evaluations on each topic but they can be scary in examination. Assignments, project papers, group works, practicals, class attendance, etc all count for your grade. Try your best and submit before time. Lecturer might not remind you to do so. The fewer the better.
You will not be punished for absenteeism or late coming. Go early to do what you paid for.
In the university, you study to know, not just to pass exams. Remember that it is what you'll become when you come out.
You have come to lay the foundation here, all alone. Please make it strong.
Never miss a test, it might not be repeated for you. Snd a missed test is a missed mark amd a low grade. Be warned
The evenings are free and dangerous, decide to make them studious. Study more, play less. Say 'no' to wild/night parties.
Always aspire to get it right, but 60% to 70% are not too bad.
University final grades are like continuous assessment grades - from tests, assignments, projects then the big exam.
Poor grade is not condoned, it leads to reseat:-
*You redo the exam if the grade is not too poor,
*You carry over the course to the next year, if the grade is too poor. But this increases your liad. It could be too heavy.
- You could be rusticated- losing some time from school.
*You can be advised to change course.
*You can even be expelled completely from school, though depending on many factors.
There's no PTA meetings for your parents to sir their views. The university authority is sovereign.
The number of years to be spent starts counting from this first year. So be careful.
The first year is called 100 level so you'll be seeing BUS 101, MAT IO1, BSC 201, STA 101, ENG 101 etc depending on the department and or faculty. These are not subjects, they are called courses. Try and make a good foundation on them at this very start because when you fail, its not easy to convince lecturers to "dash" you marks. It will affect your final grade.
University timing is not called term as in the secondary school, its called semester, though ssme three months(without strike).
You take your lectures from different rooms called lecture halls so wear comfortable shoes for 'walk around' the campus.
In the Secondary school, you were in the same class with most of your friends, but here, don't just go for a couse of study because your friends are doing it or your family members want you to do it, rather choose a course that interests you snd that tallies with your destiny. I think this should had been the first thing I should have written.
You'll be expected to take some courses from other departments, be wise not to carry over a borrowed , it can be frustrating, so avoid it.Work hard.
21.The money paid in the university is much more, yet no one will persuade you yo go for lectures. So vetter make sure you get what you paid for.
- You came for csmpus slone for sole reason, so avoid yielding to peer pressure. You are sn adult now, smoking snd alcoholism do not make a responsible adult.BE WISE.
SUMMARILY, UNIVERSITY IS NOT SECONDARY SCHOOL IN TERMS OF ENVIRONMENT, LECTURES, PEOPLE etc. DO NOT GET LOST NOR CARRIED AWAY IN THERE. BE FOCUSED. GOOD LUCK.
