Step Up is lively and entertaining, but not exactly original. A bad boy/outsider connects with a girl through dancing, we've seen it in many other dancing movies. On that note, the theme and plot line is a little trite. However, the choreography was intricate and unique, with a combination of classical and hip hop music. We really get to see the talent and hard work these actors and actresses put into this movie.
However, I thought it was unfortunate that during Nora's so-called "solo piece", Tyler made it more of a duo. On that note, I didn't really buy Channing Tatum's character. * Spoiler alert * Twice, Tyler quit dancing and gave up on Nora for insufficient reason. If this character really cared about dancing and was passionate it, would fight to dance instead of quit dancing. I understand that Tyler was supposed to be portrayed as non-committal, but I feel that quitting multiple times over the course of the movie makes this character seem inconsistent and confusing.
I would recommend this if you're up for a soppy, feel-good movie.
