Intolerable Cruelty

Intolerable Cruelty is fun and even manages to deliver a surprise plot twist.

First of all, George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones's characters, Miles Massey and Marylin Rexroth have great chemistry and clearly lust each other on-screen. Their witty exchanges and silly trial cases are much fun to watch. The plot twist was greatly appreciated and very necessary. Without it, this movie would have been another frivolous rom-com with great leads but subpar stories. My only complaint with this movie is its confusing explanation of what a prenuptial agreement is. Those who are not familiar with this concept will be lost for major turning points in the movie. Personally, I didn't understand the meaning of ripping up a prenuptial agreement. Specifically, during the ending scene, I wasn't sure if ripping up the agreement was a sign of trust or distrust. Obviously, the context afterward helped to fill in the gaps, but I think they could have simplified it more. That would make the plot flow even smoother.

Overall, this film does more than just to pass the time but it's definitely not the best rom-com there is.
