I always got this question from my subscribers:
Hi, I’m 35+ years of age, Can I still learn how to play piano?
Having a background in biology, I would always tell them that it is possible to learn any type of musical instrument at any age based on scientific research and practices. According to biology, our body might get older but not our capacity to learn. In a research, our brain has the ability to mold itself based on the consistent practice applied with any given work. This is what we called “neuroplasticity” used by doctors in treating patients with Alzheimer’s disease. The structure of the brain changes and impart a strong connection between neurons whenever a person repeatedly doing a particular work or playing an instrurment. When these connections last, they become long-term memories that improve person’s skill and talent.
Professional musicians are the ones who devoted themselves in practice which started at an early age. Many of them began to play at the age of four. On the other hand, mid-aged people can still become better musicians as long as they spare some time practicing their craft with the right practice and dedication. The fact is we are covered with many responsibilities and crowded with thoughts as we grow older. This can be one of the factors why we learn at a slow pace. But the good news is we can still learn and be better!
