Lou Clark, a twenty-six-year-old woman from a working-class background, lives with them.

She believes she is always outdone by her younger sister, Treena, who is an extroverted single mother who is full of ambition and qualifications.

Because of the closure of a local café, Louisa, who works to support her family, is unable to continue her position there.
Following several failed attempts, she is offered a unique employment opportunity:
Helping to care for Will Traynor, a successful, wealthy, and once-active young man who has quadriplegia (a form of paralysis caused by illness or injury that results in the partial to total loss of use of all four limbs and the torso, but does not affect the arms) as the result of a pedestrian-motorcycle accident.
She accepted the position. Although Louisa has no prior work experience,

Will's mother, Camilla, hires her anyhow because she believes Louisa can lift Will's spirits and make him more productive.

While visiting Will's father, Steven, a polite upper-class businessman whose marriage to Camilla is on the rocks, Louisa meets Nathan, who takes care of Will's medical requirements, and Will's mother, Camilla.

His bitterness and resentment at being disabled caused the beginning of the relationship between Louisa and Will to be difficult.

Will's ex-girlfriend, Alicia, and Will's best buddy, Rupert, announce that they are getting married. Things get much worse from there.

Through their shared experiences, Will steadily improves his communication skills and opens his mind under Louisa's guidance.
In the course of her investigation, Louisa observes Will's scarred wrists and subsequently overhears his mother and father discussing how he tried to commit suicide immediately after Camilla declined his plea to terminate his life through Dignitas, a Swiss assisted suicide organisation.

Following his failed effort, Camilla pledged to carry out her son's wish provided he consented to live for another six months, which he refused to do. It is Camilla's intention to demonstrate to him that his life is worthwhile in the future.

When it comes to Will and Camilla's agreement, Louisa keeps it secret. However, she informs Treena, and the two of them collaborate to find strategies to persuade Will to change his mind about ending his life prematurely. Louisa begins bringing Will on adventures throughout the next few weeks, and the two become closer as the weeks pass.

Louisa learns about Will's extensive travels through their numerous conversations. Will's favourite place to visit is a café in Paris, which Louisa discovers through their regular discussions. Louisa tries to persuade Will to change his ways after noticing how constrained his life has become and how few objectives he has.

Louisa's long-term lover of seven years, continues to see her even after she begins a relationship with Will, and the two eventually break up as a result.
As a result of his job loss, Louisa's father finds himself in further financial trouble.
Mr. Clark accepted an offer from Steven Traynor. Louisa comes to the realization that Will is attempting to assist her in obtaining her freedom from her father and mother.

At Alicia and Rupert's wedding, the two dance and flirt with one another. The only reason Will gets up in the morning, says Louisa, is because of her.

Before they can go on their vacation, Will suffers a nearly fatal case of pneumonia. Louisa is determined to convince Will to accompany her.
It is Louisa who decides to cancel her plans for a quick getaway.

Will is taken to the island of Mauritius by her instead of the mainland. Louisa confesses to Will that she loves him the night before she returns to the house.

Will confides in her that he wishes to share a private matter with her, but she acknowledges that she is already aware of his plans with Dignitas. Their time together has been memorable, but Will can not bear the thought of spending his days in a wheelchair. He intends to carry out his ideas to the letter.
Louisa storms off, enraged and upset, and she does not speak to him for the rest of the journey. They are pleasantly shocked to discover that Will is in such superb physical shape when they return to their home. But Louisa resigns from her position as his caregiver, and they are aware that Will wants to take his own life at some point.

Back at home, Louisa is depressed, and her mother is enraged when Louisa spills the beans about Will to her family, which she does without hesitation.
In response to a tip from Patrick, members of the media and journalists descend on the residence, resulting in the family's isolation.

A telegram from Camilla Traynor, in which Louisa is asked to travel to Switzerland, is discovered by Treena later in the day.

Despite her mother's objections, Louisa accepts and travels to see Will in person. The two of them are in agreement that the past six months have been some of the greatest of their lives when they rejoin at the clinic. He passes away shortly after in the clinic, and it is later revealed that he left Louisa a substantial fortune, intended to allow her to finish her studies and fully experience life to the fullest extent possible.
Towards the end of the novel, Louisa sits at a café in Paris and reads Will's final words to her, which are contained in a letter and tell her to "live well."
