Until the film was released, The New Mutants' status was no different from its teenage heroes, on the one hand, both of whom were isolated from the world by a large and powerful entity.
The obvious reason for putting The New Mutants on the sidelines for two years is not because it's not suitable to watch, (surprise, the movie is good!) but maybe because two studios didn't know how to launch a strange, small-scale movie that doesn't carry the traditional elements enough to market. This is basically The New Mutants, it fits perfectly into streaming services along with series such as Stranger Things, Umbrella Academy and Locke & Key. New Mutants, which may have some flaws but is very fun and fun, didn't get this treatment, but even put it aside, it's annoying. Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix.
The plot of the film is not complicated, as five teenage mutants find themselves trapped in a mysterious facility where they are studied by Dr. Cecila Reyes (Ales Braga), who seems to be the only adult in the film. But when the new patient Danny Monstar (Blue Hunt) arrives, strange things begin to happen, with each hero facing his real inner fears. They will have to work together if they want to know how to stop it. While all this offers nothing new, the film can attract you all the time thanks to the wonderful cast who breathe life into these characters, as well as thanks to a script that, although it doesn't take a lot of risks, attracts you a lot, generating enough thrill to watch.
Is it a movie? New Mutants scary enough to be considered a full horror movie? Is it melodramatic enough to be a fully adolescent movie? No. Is it bad? No. Watching it is enjoyable and efficiently produced, and it actually gets better as it progresses. Although it starts as just a fine film, it ends up as a good movie. Even visual effects aren't that bad, ultimately including characters like Eliana Rasputin (also known as Magik)(Anya Taylor Joy), which actually looks pretty cool. (The shape of Wolfsbane is much better than a dog born by CG computer in every scene in The Call of theWild).
Director and co-writer Josh Boone made a movie that looked like a movie. X-Men I, which if you rewatch it now, will feel like it has an ambition and a similar appearance to an experimental episode of a cable TV series, but Boone made his film in an era that requires the size and dangers of superhero movies to be more epic to attract mainstream audiences.
What strengthens a movie New Mutants is his powerful crew, led by Blue Hunt as Danny Monstar (it's worth noting that this is the first feature film featuring a key character and an actress of Native American roots) and Maisie Williams as Ryan Sinclair (or as comic book lovers, Mirage Wolfspanin, respectively).
None of the new converts like to have their powers, but they reluctantly accept them because they don't see another alternative. Every character is in this facility because her power has killed someone, making most of them full of guilt. Of the five, the rebellious and unruly Eliana was the most skilled at using her powers, something the film uses heavily at the end. Sam Guthrie, played by Charlie Heaton, may have the most dangerous abilities, but the film has never been unleashed, allowing Elijah to get scenes of super powers that satisfy audiences. The same applies to Roberto da Costa, played by Henri Zaga, who gets a scene that reveals the unsatiscent powers, but does not have the opportunity to review them in the last scene.
There's one fun section in chapter two that looks like a scene from a movie. The BreakfastClub, which Boone said had an impact on his film. But The New Mutants begins building the peak slowly upwards towards the most vibrant and fun second half.
You may feel that the first chapter is slow and boring, with a lot of disclosures. Coal Miner's Daughter classic country is in the background. We understand! He's from the south and he's a miner! There are also plenty of moments when we wonder about not using a certain character to get out of the predicament they're going through at that moment.
The events of the film are located in The Universe X-Men,which contains many hints and hidden surprises that will be recognized and rejoiced by fans of both the film and comic series.
to acquire The New Mutants already have a place to be the ultimate starting point thanks to the many delays, and now that it's already been produced in a finished series, a really good film, it might be able to earn its place as a classic movie to watch in the evening.
The bottom line
The New Mutants didn't deserve to be set aside for several years. It's not a messy movie that's not worth watching, it's a good and entertaining film, but sometimes it looks small-scale. The young cast succeeds in making their characters exciting, lovable, and even more attractive than some of the side characters in previous X-Men films. While the first half of the film may be somewhat monotonous, things become even more unusual and entertaining in the second half. New Mutants has earned its place as an interesting film in Fox's now dead X-Men series, but it's stronger and better than weak expectations about it might suggest because of its long delay.
