What Worries Me The Most: No... It's Not About Having Enough TP

in hive-114105 •  5 years ago  (edited)

What worries me the most right now in regards to this CoronaVirus, the supply chain breaking down and the long term effects all this may have on my homestead is the fact that most, if not all, of Mr Golden D's heart medications are made; or come from, overseas.

Forget that these were our local stores' shelves earlier this week.

I have plenty of toilet paper, vitamins and supplements and I make my own hand sanitizer using my Aloe Vera plants that I grow. We also have full pantries and freezers; plus enough water for all of us here. I had even ordered the dogs' food (through Chewy) three weeks ago to last until probably May.

I have been prepping for any event in our life. We have enough to bug in here for a few months.

Mr Golden D takes seven pills daily for his heart. From blood thinners to a special pill that helps his body accept the stents he had surgically in-planted last spring.

Late last night our governor closed ALL schools in our state until April 5.

Even back in September 2019, the US was concerned about how overseas countries pretty much control the pharmaceutical industry. We are reliant upon them for our health.

And here from May 2019.

We just refilled his prescriptions (a three month supply) earlier this week- hence where the images above came from; so I do feel a little better. But what happens in 85 days when those prescriptions need to be refilled? Will there be some in stock at our pharmacy?

I am so glad you have a 3 month supply. Like you, I am worried about the supply chain, even for things made here if people are unable to work.

Very true. Hubby works for a shop that supplies Chrysler with molds to make parts; they had a meeting yesterday about it; plus precautions to take for health, well being and safety. No one is allowed in the building without an appt, and if you are sick they want you home. His job doesn't allow you to work from home so if the car company (companies) run out of parts... he may be home due to supply chain issues. But he is working 12 hour day, 7 days a week now- so a little respite would be nice... but financially it will ruin many people he works with.

The company that a friend works at has been short of parts for weeks. Many of them are produced in hard hit areas of the world. This is going to be a mess.

The whole globalisation of supply chains is going to need some serious rethinking after all this.

Countries need to be way more self sufficient and self reliant than they currently are.

I agree 100%. I never really realized how much we (in the US) depend on other countries fr so many items.

There are certain strategic assets - pharmaceuticals being a key one - that every country should have at least 75% self sufficiency.

It's very humbling isn't it? We rely on insulin here at our house.

Yes, indeed, there has not been enough attention paid to the supply chain aspect of a societal disruption. Hopefully required medication is not impacted, and from what I understand, necessary trips for groceries and medicine and such are not impacted by quarantines. Hopefully all passes over sooner rather than later.
