“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” ― Plato

I may be a music lover, but I am not a huge fan of "traditional" musicals in terms of movies... I am however a HUGE lover of musical movies which have both history and substance and tonight I watched one of those! Personally, as light-hearted and somewhat comical as the details were, I believe it held a much more serious and stronger underlying message.

I was fortunate enough to grow up with a mom who exposed me to all the timeless greats and these artists have become my passions when it comes to music. I have in turn, unintentionally imparted the same onto my son Jude and I am eternally grateful that as a 10yr old boy in 2019, that he can sing along to The Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, ABBA, Depeche Mode and countless others - the same however, cannot be said for a pretty good portion of the younger generation as well as plenty people my own age. When and HOW did people so completely lose the plot when it comes to music?! Yes, there are many fantastic artists these days, but there is a lot more... (how do I put this politely) SHIT than there is good stuff! lol!

There have been quite a few musically driven movies coming out of late - all of which are highlighting some of the worlds greatest artists... and I think this is amazing, because as much as many of us know WELL who these greats are, the younger generation don't - and it is about bloody time they were educated! lol! I am making myself sound a LOT older than I am with all this protesting haha, but reality is - music was better back "then".

Back to the movie I mentioned - it is called "YESTERDAY" and in short... a completely unrecognised musician was hit by a bus (yes literally lol) - when he awoke, it soon became apparent that not a soul on planet earth (not even Google) had EVER heard of The Beatles, so having been an avid fan, he decided to start singing their songs... and so the story goes on (no complete spoilers here lol).

What I loved about this, was how it brings so many absolutely brilliant classics into the sphere of the youngsters today. So MANY No.1 hits by one of the worlds greatest bands - which they have NEVER heard, and probably never would have had it not been for seeing this movie. Jude, having been named after one of their most iconic songs is always in awe when he sees the original being performed or even other greats doing it justice! And yes, I named my son after a song, because songs had SUBSTANCE back then!

I felt the same thing about the recently released movie Bohemian Rhapsody. Freddie Mercury is, was and always will be the "Queen" of rock, much like Elvis Presley will forever be the King of Rock 'n Roll and Michael Jackson the King of pop! (In my opinion anyway... lol). These are ALL legends which the younger generation absolutely SHOULD be exposed to and I am thrilled to see so many of them being brought to the forefront of the movie scene lately.

I am so very thankful that I was introduced to so many masters who were WAY before my time, because now I can not only appreciate present but past musical masterpieces too. Jude sings in the shower EVERY SINGLE DAY and I can tell you this much... he is NOT singing ANY of the rubbish that other kids are listening to - thank HEAVENS! lol!

We may not be able to change the course of the future, but we most certainly can play our part in keeping such brilliant flames alive.

“I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.” ― Billy Joel

A few years back I introduced some of the legends to my son. It turned up that he is still a fan of Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, Queen, Bee Gees, Eagles, Elvis, Sting, Phil Collins, Bob Marley. He loves them all! He likes newer singers like Adam Lambert, Coldplay, Sia and LP. SInce he is into music and dancing, I thought having a broader exposure to all sorts of genres will help him develop a better ear for the music, which he did.

You are spot on there @lymepoet! You have done his such a service by inspiring a love for ALL music. Jude is very much the same... loves everything new and old and it makes me so happy to know that no matter what - he will carry that through to adulthood and hopefully one day to his own children :)

musicmonday well it's 9:20 monday night still counts right? for some odd reason i can still hear rhis playing :)

Music transcends ages, as it was in the lyrics that carried meaning whether fighting for rights or revealing untold stories most wrote songs containing a deep message within.

With records being played with our music of 60's and 70's the sons grew up and in time enjoyed experiencing their own taste. Marilyn Manson is one artist that comes to mind, deep lyrics, a musician they enjoyed, bought and read his book "The Long Hard Road Out of Hell". Yes then explained it to me, after reading some passages in the book, listening to the words I too came to appreciate some songs. Music is an expression within a timeline on what is happening.

Music is the strongest form of magic. - Marilyn Manson

Beautifully put!!!!! And oh so true!
And I agree with Manson - Music is indeed magic!
Love Mansons music!
