Mindful Monday - Losing My Religon

Happy Monday Steemverse!

I hope all is well in your neck of the woods. I apologize for my sparse posting lately. Having 2 deaths, a wedding, and the holidays in the past month and half has kept me and my mind a bit occupied. The creative well has been running a bit dry. Granted Mindful Monday doesn't take much creativity if any. I still need the thoughts to flow.

Through the years, centuries, and millennia there has been a battle, more or less, about religion. It is one of those topics that people feel so passionate about that it has destroyed families, people, societies, and in some cases even war. So why on earth would I even want to approach this subject? Why not? We shouldn't be afraid of having a discussion on any subject. Not talking about it gives it a power that it does not deserve.

My personal belief honestly, anti-religion and pro-spirituality. This belief has come from personal experiences. I have had the leader of a very large church and 'renowned' author tell my kids to call me 'evil' because I don't go to church and because my personal beliefs don't fall inline with what his church teaches. This same man chastised me for divorcing because I was being abused. "It is the mother's responsibility to maintain the family unit at any cost. You gave up your life when you had children." He also told me that I should move back in with my ex-husband to be 'nanny' to my own children because it would build more stability in my children. My answer to this was a resounding NO. This same man also helped orchestrate circumstances in which Child Protective Services were called on me several times and in the end with my ex-husband kidnapping my kids and charging me with abandonment (I have touched on this a bit over the years, this however is not the time to discuss this issue).

The other impacting moment was when I was told I was not welcome at church because I did not wear a dress. That 'God'took it as an insult for me to not be dressed in the manner he had set forth. I looked at that preacher and said 'Funny, my god is happy that I came to church regardless of my attire.' Was then asked to leave and not come back.

Religion is belief in someone else’s experience. Spirituality is having your own experience.
– Deepak Chopra

My personal view has become one of acceptance and understanding. I believe it has 😁. I had a fundamental problem with someone telling me that Buddhists, Hindu, any indigenous people and so forth are wrong for their beliefs. Not only that, but they are going to burn in hell. What a concept. What a way to live life that anyone that does not believe the way you do is dammed. That to me is very judgmental. I don't have the right to tell anyone that they are living their life wrong. That they are going to burn in hell for all eternity. I don't even know if eternity or hell exist. I mean if people want to believe we all came from stardust, great. If they want to believe that we were zapped her into existence.. great. We all have our own journeys to make it isn't my place or anyone's place for that matter to tell you that you are wrong for the way you believe.

I had an ever bigger problem with a 'man' telling me how to live my life especially when their life is out of order. How many adulterers and swindlers have we seen in the 'Evangelical' scene? Do as I say not as I do? when we should be practicing what we preach. That proved to me that it is part of a much large scenario that is purely money based. You give to your church and you will receive riches in return. That sounds more like a cult than a religion in my opinion.

I think that the greater majority that fall into religion are simply wanting to find their place in the grand scheme of things. I also believe that there is a fair portion of those people that look into religion as a means of spirituality. I truly believe that the masses have confused religion and spirituality.

You don't have to go to a building to listen to a man who has put is own spin on words he read in a book to tell you how to live your life. I firmly believe that we are innately inclined towards a sense of fellowship, to help others in times of need, to look at all that life has to offer. I feel it is circumstance that impedes upon our growth. It takes that individual's desire to be more than their circumstance. I truly admire spiritual people. To have that amount of faith and belief in something that it gives a sense of peace, of balance, of oneness, and most of all a sense of belonging.

a relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or sinister.

We are seeing more and more cases of religion being used as justification. Justification for war, for hatred and the like. Even with being what I have been through, I still have a very hard time understanding where any religion gets off on telling people who they can and cannot be friends with. How they can tell someone how to live and most of all that they are a bad person because they don't think the same way as they do. And why? WHY? do people feel that they need to fill their lives with this mentality. Almost as a lesser of two evils. When the 'evil' is hatred how can that be a choice?

I cannot and will not hate because I do not understand. I cannot and will not hate because it is the 'popular' opinion. We need to stop and reflect on things when the reality has become the norm of hatred as well as the doctrine. I sure as hell am not going to pay money for my place in 'heaven.' My actions are my price and if that isn't good enough then I wouldn't want to be there.

This is a subject that I could spend sometime talking about. My mind goes wild with possibilities and I could post pages upon pages with the thoughts on this subject alone. It is high time we start discussing and communicating, if not we are doomed. The only way to start to resolve some of the worlds' problems is to start talking about them.

Sometimes I think those people who try to impose belief on us are kind of just cosmic jesters, a sort of trial to see test our conviction, tolerance and capacity to remain calm before the illusion. Of course, they just might be jerks. Nice subject, I enjoy this kind of debate a lot as well!

I was very sad reading this post @tryskele. It is all too common that we cross paths with people who are legalistic, self-righteous, and hypocritical. In the name of religion and supposedly doing "good." I would imagine most of your readers have had similar experiences. I certainly have.

They were the chief barrier to my coming to faith. But, I am grateful that God graciously helped me overcome all of the man-made religiosity and learned about true relationship. With the Creator of all that is.

I agree with this:

"We shouldn't be afraid of having a discussion on any subject."

I grew up hearing "in polite company, we don't talk about religion or politics ..." Really? Why? Anyway, I for one don't let it stop me, if it seems appropriate.

I hope all is well with you, as you deal with the losses you mention in the beginning. I know that can be hard. Take care!

The Chopra line says it all in that one short sentence. I think it's remarkable that so many people think that their religion is divine and created by God, when every single religion is a construct of man. I've studied many religions, but I'm most familiar with Christianity.

There's a difference between God and religion. If there wasn't, why would we need so many of them?

In Christianity, I believe the only parts of the book where one can logically accept them as being truth received directly from God, would be the ten commandments and the quoted words of Jesus. The entire rest of the book consists of the ideas and words of men. Men created a lot of the "rules."

I find it perplexing that the religious people of the world worship and serve the religion they've accepted, and not the God they claim.

As Dipak says: Religion is living the experience of another. Spirituality is having and living my own experience.
Excellent post.

Welcome back. Sorry about your recent losses. Religion is a very controversial topic and the sad thing is that if practiced with honesty and coherence it should be the favorite conversation topic anywhere.
If religious leaders of all denomination honored the alleged love, virtue, and goodness I their sacred texts, we should not need to avoid the topic because there would be agreement on the fundamental issue of making humanity better and the world a paradise.
Your stories are just shocking. I do not know what I would do if a religious person tried to interfere with my personal life.
Peace

Sorry about your losses @stryskele. It hard to believe a pastor would interfere with your personal life and be so judgemental but some think they have all the answers.

I fell out of religion a long time ago for some very similar reasons. Obviously our experiences are very different, and it's abhorrent to me that anyone at all in a civilised society would treat anyone like you have been treated.

Not everyone who follows religious practices is that set in their ways, however; the United States Methodist Church is on the verge of splitting over differences in opinion, and we've seen all sorts of schisms of all sorts of sizes all throughout history since Martin Luther nailed his 99 theses to the door of the church. If anything, that goes to show that religion, if not manmade, is at least interpreted by humans, and interpretations definitely very.

I love your views on Spirituality. I like the idea that our strength comes from within. Thank you for sharing a positive post!

Thank you for putting your heart out and writing such a post. I can relate to parts of your story as I had been brought up in a religious family. While getting older and inquiring more about other religions I was fed the same b.s. which only made me look deeper into them. I hated dealing with the hypocrisy of the right-doers which have never thought that they were actually doing more harm than good.

So glad nature is my religion, this is one rabbit hole I don't go down, religion and politics is the other, each to their own. What you said sounds very familiar, well done in putting your experiences down.

Ugh, how INSANELY judgey are your church folk? Or ex church folk - that's definitely quite NOT how to interact with others in a loving way and what always gets me is that the Divine, a.k.a also known as God, would NEVER make such rules up. I'm sure he'd just say: 'Hey, act from a place of LOVE and everything else will follow, dudes!' .

I too was severely judged for being a single Mum - especially by my cousin, who felt it was irresponsible and blah blah blah. Funnily enough, I'm the one in the happiest family. xx

Sorry to hear you have had a tough January - there's a bit of it it going around, that's for sure. xx

I am so sorry for your losses recently. During the holiday season makes the loss even sadder, for me. The world is rejoicing and my heart would wonder how they could rejoice when I am so sad.

I am also sorry in the way that you lost your religion. I cannot believe that any man of the cloth would even think this way. let alone act on it. The shame is on them, although that does little to make anyone feel better. How many people are sucked into a life of religion that is more cult than Jim Jones on steroids?

To me, religion, or spirituality comes from within. Period. If you have it, they can't take it away from you.

Always a good write from your corner.

Having spirituality or religion to guide one or just having it their like an old friend, to fall back on, is key to a worry free life. So sorry for your loss and struggle this year. :-( The wedding sounds like it could have been something fun. For me they are always rejuvenating to the mind and spirit.

Sending prayers 🙏 @tryskele, thank you for sharing.

My personal belief honestly, anti-religion and pro-spirituality. Beautiful thought

In the wrong hands religion is poison my friend.
As a believer I simply follow the Golden Rule; "Treat all others as you want to be treated". Simple, sweet and easy!
Blessings!

This reflects my experience as well, @tryskele, and it is why I left the church. I won't tell my own story here, but it was very difficult as my parents were very religious and at a certain point I began to see hypocrisy and an us-vs.-them mentality that seemed to be the antithesis of what being a religious person should be about.

On the one hand, I loved many aspects of the church, especially the community aspect, the charitable work and the messages about being kind and giving. But on the downside, there was the judgmentalism that you spoke of.

That said, I know many people who are both religious and fairly open minded, and are accepting of differences of opinion, choice and lifestyle. So it is certainly possible! With my kids, I have focused on teaching them to develop a good moral compass, and to make the world a better place.

Howdy tryskele! I think you should do a series on this topic because you are so passionate about it. I think everyone would like that! Sounds like a rough and busy month you had, sorry to hear about the deaths.

Couldn't agree with you more, I hate religion.

you've really been busy and that makes you distracted, I hope you clear your head and come back recharged.

You are 100% correct in what you say. The "do as I say, not as I do" mentality of leaders of churches all over the world has lead many blindlessly to follow the person. The Bible teaches us to "beware of false gods".

Also, you don't have to go to church to worship.

Nowhere in the Bible does it say you have to have a one-on-one relationship with church leaders. All you have to have is a personal relationship with God.
