_π MEMORY VERSE: "When thou sitters to eat with a ruler consider diligently what is before thee" (PROVERBS 23:1)
Daniel, a slave boy in Babylon exemplified good discipline over his appetite. Given the privilege of being served with varieties of delicacies in the king's palace, he opted out of idolatrous dainties and deceitul meat, and purposed in his heart not to be defiled (Daniel 1:8).
Appetite is the desire to eat. It is stimulated by many factors such as hunger, greed and sensuality. The desire to satisiy the flesh makes one fall for the devil's enticement, as it is usually stated that "The way to a man's heart is through his belly." Jesus first temptation by the devil was with food. Esau lost his birth right because of food. Indiscipline in appetite has led many to break their fast before the time schedule, eat the Lord's Supper unworthily, go after junk food, and eat food offered to idols. Consequently, it will also lead to compromise and unequal yoke. God's counsel therefore is to "put a knife to your throat..." (Proverbs 23:2). This entails repenting of gluttony, daily watching over one's appetite and putting one's trust in Jesus and His word (Matthew 4:3,4).
