Every minute, 5 people die prematurely in India due to coal and diesel fumes. Fuel smoke alone kills thousands of Indians every day. This information came to light in a study conducted 3 years ago by researchers from four international universities.
Researchers say that the smoke from fossil fuels such as coal-diesel kills more than 87 lakh people a year worldwide, with India leading the way. In India alone, fossil fuel pollution killed 2.4 million 60,000 people prematurely, accounting for 30.7% of the world's deaths.
According to the researchers, the amount of PM 2.5 particles in India's air is constantly increasing due to fossil fuels and millions of people are dying prematurely when they come in contact with these PM 2.5 particles.
Researchers' studies also show that the amount of PM 2.5 particles in India increased the most between 2012-2018. According to researchers, Uttar Pradesh is the leading cause of death in India due to the effects of PM 2.5 particles in the air.
It is followed by Bihar and West Bengal. Also in the top ten are Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Karnataka, Jharkhand and Orissa.
