The types and style of farming in Bangladesh varies greatly with the type of soil and weather conditions. The crops here are grown by farmers based on what is available in the natural resources and what climate to work with. In this country, two main types of farming are common: rainfed and irrigation based farming.

Irrigation-Based Farming :
Irrigation farming is very much a part of agriculture in Bangladesh. For rice, farmers need to irrigate the extra water the crops need to grow. Deep tube well and pump produce water in the areas where it is difficult to access through natural water sources like river. Irrigation becomes important in the season of the Boro because there isn’t a lot of natural rain during that time. However, with the development of irrigation technologies, agricultural production has been made very high in Bangladesh, which is leading to an upsurge in the making of food and meeting the country’s food requirements.

Rainfed Farming :
Rainfed farming means that farmers earn their living by growing their crops using rain water alone. 50 percent of Bangladeshis depend on the rainy season, particularly monsoon or Kharif season, to plant rice, jute, and mustard. Not all of them can afford to irrigate their farmland, so they count on the rain. If it rains too little crops may not be produced or they can be damaged if it rains too much. Rainfed agriculture relies very much on the weather conditions.

• Why do you think maintaining healthy soil is important?

Maintaining Healthy Soil

Maintaining healthy soil is highly significant for Bangladesh because the majority of Bangladesh’s population relies on agriculture. The soil is fine if the crops grown are healthy. Gave plants the nutrients they need and held enough water, good healthy soil is important in Bangladesh’s unpredictable weather. As a result, diseases and pests decrease and crop quality and production improve when farmers keep the soil’s nutrients and moisture in balance. One way farmers can help the organic status of their soil, which is useful in the villages, is using natural methods such as organic fertilizers and compost. Organic matter in the soil increases the yields and also maintain the farming land for several years.

• Explain the two main types of farming

In Bangladesh, two main types of farming are practiced: Conventional farming and Organic or Natural farming.

Conventional farming :
In Bangladesh, conventional or traditional farming is really common. The method of farming is to use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides to increase crops’ grow faster and to increase crop yield in a short time. While it provides a quick shot in the arm of crop production, over the long run, it can decimate the soil’s quality. It can make it less fertile. Sometimes it also pollutes the soil and water around it. But many Bangladeshi farmers still use this method, it saves them money and lets them grow crops earlier to get their produce to the market faster.

Organic farming :
Bangladesh is organically friendly. Farming done in this way means that farmers use natural fertilizers, such as cow manure, green manure and the waste from biogas plants, instead of chemicals. It also has the added benefits of not only being good for the soil and soil health into the future. It is friendly to the environment. It is nutritious farming techniques, which allows food to be created in farms and be safe for human consumption.

• What are greenhouses? Mention two types of greenhouse.

Greenhouses are a new, but fast growing tendency in farming in Bangladesh. These are structures covered by materials such as glass or plastic that allow us to control the internal temperature. It enables farmers to be able to grow certain fruits, vegetables or flowers all year round regardless of what the outside weather may be. Sunlight is trapped in the greenhouse and makes the inside warm and helps crops grow faster.

Plastic Greenhouse

Plastic Greenhouse :
In Bangladesh plastic greenhouses set up is relatively easy and the cost is pretty cheap. To keep the temperature inside steady the structure is covered in plastic sheets by the farmers. This type of greenhouse has been adopted by the many small farmers in the rural areas, and they have grown vegetables, especially in the winter. The greenhouses help for quick production, making them profitable to farmers.

Glass Greenhouse

Glass Greenhouse :
However, glass greenhouses are the more expensive and are mostly in bigger cities or commercial areas in Bangladesh. Greenhouses made with glass allow more sunshine to enter, so the crops are kept warm. Mostly, they are used for growing high value crops like vegetables or flowers that don’t grow as fast but need to be grown in a controlled temperature environment. Glass greenhouses are useful for growing quality vegetation which require a stable and warm environment.
